SUMMARY
Works under supervision to provide
assistance to the special education teacher, and assists the
teacher in maintaining appropriate classroom activities and
environment, to assure that the special education students may
learn effectively, by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Instructs and assists students in
group and independent activities.
Instructs individual students or small groups of students to
reinforce skills initially introduced by the teacher.
Helps to identify the learning needs of exceptional
students.
Helps physically handicapped
students with movement, which may include lifting and/or
placement in a sitting or standing position.
May accompany students to
breakfast, lunch and assist physically handicapped
students.
Assists the teacher in devising
special strategies for students based on their individual
needs, interests, and abilities.
Assists teacher with clerical tasks such as typing, copying, or
other office tasks.
May accompany special education
students to the restroom, lunch room, playground, emergency
drills, assemblies, field trips, and to the school bus and
assist in physical needs.
Operates and cares for equipment
used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
Alerts the teacher to any problem
or special information about a student.
Assists a substitute teacher in
keeping the general atmosphere of the classroom as consistent
as possible.
Attends meetings or in-service
related to the educational needs of special education
students.
RECORDKEEPING and
REPORTING
Responsible for assisting with
I.E.P. and Student records.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or
general education degree (GED) required in addition to an AA
Degree, 60 college credits or passed Para Pro Test minimum
score of 459 points. First Aid/CPR is required (The Special
Education department will arrange for training if not
attained.)
