Yukon Flats School District is seeking a qualified, enthusiastic School Counselor/District Test Coordinator for the 2012-13 School-year. The Counselor would reside in Fort Yukon, work from the District Office and serve primarily the Fort Yukon School with occasional travel to the District's other six schools. Fort Yukon School has a K-12 enrollment of approximately 115 students. The Counselor would have usual counseling responsibilities such as: high school guidance counseling, individual personal counseling for students, preventative program presentations to classrooms, and District-wide coordination of State Testing requirements. There is a strong cohesiveness among the Staff dedicated to excellence in education for the children of Fort Yukon. The District encompasses a vast geographical area with seven schools. Fort Yukon is a special community with a prominent place and significance in the history of rural Alaska. The population is primarily Gwich'in Athabascan and has a strong cultural base. Fort Yukon is accessible only by plane (or boat prior to freeze-up) and is served several times daily by three air carriers. There is a resident doctor and active health clinic, and a relatively large grocery store. POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION: Counselor/Test Coordinator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. State of Alaska Type A, or a Type C counselor certification
  2. Educational counselor degree or wide-ranging teaching experience
  3. At least three years experience in a school setting
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of cultural lifestyles 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master's degree in counseling or related area
  2. Demonstrated successful school counseling experience
  3. Experience working with a diverse population
  4. Experience working in an Alaska rural school setting
  5. Experience working in a cross-cultural setting
  6. Experience as District Test Coordinator

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Acts as District Test Coordinator
  2. Carries out academic/social counseling requirements (P-12)
  3. Counsels individual students when referred by school or family
  4. Provides career and post high school training guidance
  5. Consults with teachers in development of behavioral management programs
  6. Provides grief counseling to individuals and schools as needed
  7. Acts as liaison between school and community, state and federal agencies; refers students to these agencies when services are needed outside school counseling services
  8. Provides substance abuse prevention education

OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Train principals and teacher in the basics of keeping transcript records
  2. Check transcripts each semester and go over them with students
  3. Provide copies of transcripts and other school records as requested
  4. Check and file report cards and transcripts of all students
  5. Assume other duties as assigned
