Scope of Responsibilities:
The substitute school nurse is responsible for implementing the school health program in the absence of the permanent school nurse. Scope of responsibilities include providing school nursing services for an assigned school population, for the health needs of a specific student, for a group of students participating on a school sponsored field trip or out of school setting activity, or in collaboration with the permanent school nurse to implement mandated health screenings or other special nursing activities.
o Implements the students individualized health care plan (IHCP) for students with special health care needs as developed by the permanent school nurse
o Revises the IHCP during permanent school nurse’s absence, if needed due to changes in the student’s health status or management needs, and in collaboration with parents and medical provider
o Provides medically prescribed interventions, including medication administration, per State laws and regulation, and care to ill or injured students per regulations of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the policies of the NPS
o Responds to students health needs providing nursing intervention in response to health promotion, illness and injuries; psycho/emotional support, crisis intervention, and statutory mandated reporting for suspected child abuse or neglect
o Documents in the computerized health file, each student encounter including complaints or symptoms, nursing assessment, intervention, referral and disposition of the student, and maintains confidentiality of health information per Federal and State laws
o Communicates with parents, faculty, and medical providers as needed to ensure student’s health and safety
o Provides basic first aid to injured students and staff
o Manages students with communicable diseases per MDPH guidelines and collaborates with the Needham Health Department as needed
o Participates in emergency response per the NPS and community plan
o Responds to all medical emergencies in the school and administers CPR or first aid as needed
o Implements and documents results of State mandated health screening for vision, hearing, height and weight and BMI, and scoliosis
o Collaborates with the school nurse to implement various health education, health promotion and prevention, and data management initiatives.
The substitute school nurse reports to the Director of School Health Services and the school building principal. The school physician is also available for consultation.
Current License to practice as Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, per the Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN)
Current CPR/ AED certification
The substitute school nurse must adhere to the Nurse Practice Act, pertinent regulations governing nursing practice in Massachusetts, the guidelines and standards of care established by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and work in accordance to the policies and procedures established by the Needham Public Schools (NPS).
