E.L. Haynes Public
Charter School was founded in 2004 and has an award-winning program based on
effective practices for advancing student achievement. E.L. Haynes is among the
top-performing charter schools in Washington D.C., and is recognized locally
and nationally as a model and for our exceptional student achievement gains.
E.L. Haynes currently serves over 800 students in grades PreK-9 and continues
to grow until it serves PreK-12th grade.
Our Mission
Every E.L. Haynes
student of every race, socioeconomic status, and home language will reach high
levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his
or her choice. Every E.L. Haynes student will be adept at mathematical
reasoning, will use scientific methods effectively to frame and solve problems,
and will develop the lifelong skills needed to be successful individuals,
active community members, and responsible citizens.
Description
The primary
responsibilities of an E.L. Haynes School Counselor include:

Meets with all students
in the classroom, at each grade level at least two times per year, implementing
approved classroom curriculum addressing the three areas of school counseling
National Standards: a) academic guidance, b) college and career guidance and c)
emotional/social guidance.
- Implements counseling program
aligned with the American School Counselor Association preferred guidance
curriculum, and also be aligned with district curriculum standards.
- Provides information to all
students regarding course sequence, course type, academic GPA, college
admissions, entrance tests, and extra-curricular activities to guarantee
the four-year-college option for all students.
- Helps students and parents
develop a four-year-plan of course selection and sequence for the high
school years and assumes responsibility for periodic review and revision
of the plan.
- Monitors all students’ academic
progress toward high school graduation; assumes responsibility for
developing an intervention plan for students at risk of failure.
- Provides intervention and
services needed for those students with inconsistent school attendance and
tracks effectiveness of services using data.
- Provides services for students
with failing grades; meets with these students in a small group or
individual format, and partners with the student, teacher(s) and parent(s)
to create a plan of action for remediation and future academic success.
- Provides the guidance that is
needed at the site level for social/emotional needs; refers student and/or
families to community resources to meet unusual or extreme needs that are
beyond the scope of the school.
- Assists students in
understanding and accepting their aptitudes, interests, attitudes,
abilities and opportunities for self-fulfillment.
- Lead an advisory group and
deliver instruction aligned to the American Counseling Standards.
- Participates and/or chairs a
weekly team meeting to assess current academic/behavioral/attendance data
and develop macro/micro intervention plans to address identified needs.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will
also possess the following knowledge and skills:
- Two or more years of teaching
experience in an urban setting
- Focus on a systems-oriented
approach to student, classroom and school culture
- History of building successful
relationships with adults and school-aged children
- Excellent communication skills
- Proven track record of meeting
extremely high standards for student achievement
- A bachelor’s degree from a
competitive college or university
- At least 3 years of urban
counseling experience with a track record of high student achievement
- Hold a license in
Clinical Social Work
