ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  Other duties may be assigned
  • Assist Lead Teacher with daily routines and activities.
  • Interacts with children encouraging problems solving, exploration, experimentation and questioning.
  • Assists Lead Teacher in preparation of learning environment, sets up centers and prepares    needed materials and supplies.
  • Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and other (non) instructional functions.
  • Supervises the classroom when Lead Teacher is out of room.
  • Handles attendance reports and related clerical functions with the teacher.
  • Operates standard school equipment such as laminator, copier, audiovisual, etc.
  • Helps Lead Teacher with general housekeeping tasks; provides a safe, appropriate learning environment.
  • Assists children with health and physical needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality of families and workplace.
  • Serves as bus assistant for transportation of Head Start children.
  • Helps children remember the rules; assures physical safety as children get on and off the bus as well as during transportation.
  • Observes children’s behavior and takes positive action to assure safety and well-being.
  • Assists in bus emergency evacuation and during backing maneuvers.
  • Maintains current First Aid and CPR Certification.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises children, parents and volunteers at the request of the teacher.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree.  One year experience in early childhood programs preferred.         

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Child Development Associate preferred. 
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
 
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
 
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: 
Previous work in child care.  Ability to develop effective working relationships with children, staff and the school community.  Ability to clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally life and/or move up to 50 pounds.  The employee must be able to push items of 50 lbs. such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral doohickey vision.

SALARY:              $8.74 (no CDA) - $9.28 (CDA)
