Classroom Assistant Position:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS -
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING:
High school diploma; Minimum of 30 semester hours of
completed college credit; Paraprofessional Aide certification from the Illinois
State Board of Education
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS -
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING:
Bachelor’s Degree in special
education or related field. Training in and ability to modify/adapt general
education curriculum.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
Sincere desire to work
with children in a classroom and/or therapeutic setting.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
Experience working with special
education students; organizing and preparing classroom lessons and materials.
CREDENTIALS AND/OR SKILLS AND
ABILITIES:
Ability to function as a member of an educational
team, collaborate with staff, other personnel, community agencies, and parents.
Strong behavior management and positive discipline skills. Ability to be flexible
and receptive to change; caring, creative, and patient personality.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under direction of the Lead Teacher, the Classroom
Assistant will provide quality services to special education students (grades
kindergarten through grade twelve) in a non-public special education setting
through participation in planning and implementation of student programs,
including special instruction and tutorial assistance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited
to the following:
1. Assist with instructional programs and general
school operations
2. Participate in daily and long-range lesson and
classroom activity planning
3. Conduct learning exercises with individual
children in specialized education programs
4. Alert teacher(s) to the special needs of
individual children
5. Provide escort assistance for children as
necessary
6. Record data and help maintain student performance
records
7. Maintain student work and study areas
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees in this position must have the ability to:
1. Enter data into a computer terminal/typewriter,
operate standard office equipment, and use a telephone.
2. See and read a computer screen and printed matter
with or without vision aids.
3. Hear and understand speech at normal levels and
on the telephone.
4. Speak so that others may understand at normal
levels and on the telephone.
5. Stand, walk, and bend over, reach overhead,
grasp, push, pull and move, lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employees in this position will be required to work
in indoor and outdoor environments and come in direct contact with students,
staff members and the public.
