2.          Appropriate State of Michigan counseling certification.

3.          A minimum of one year experience in guidance counseling.

General Description:

1.          Counseling and assisting students with educational, personal, social, occupational, placement and related problems in planning and adjustment.

2.          Working with teachers in studying, diagnosing and understanding students; planning, conducting group guidance activities; utilizing community resources; and participating in inservice teacher-education planning.

3.          Work with administrative staff and other school personnel planning, developing and conducting the total guidance program, curriculum study and research.

4.          Working with lay groups, parents and individuals in coordinating school and community resources and activities which contribute to the improvements of pupil personnel services.

Essential Functions:

1.          Encourage students to evaluate alternatives, formulate realistic goals and become increasingly self-directive.

2.          Maintain acceptable relationships with students and respect their confidences.

3.          Maintain a confidential file card for each student recording data and subject of each conference and other pertinent data.  Also maintains log of sessions with students.

4.          Provide an orientation program for all students new to the building.

5.          Assist with registration of students.

6.          Conduct counseling interviews; teacher principal and parent referrals; retained students; new students; failures; student requests; provide occupational and educational information; pertinent facts about jobs, college, graduation requirements, credits earned; discuss vocational and educational goals.  A report of said interview is filed in the student's personal file.  A conference held with the teacher or principal when deemed appropriate by the counselor. 

7.          Recognize and respond to patterns that may be symptomatic of educational or emotional problems and refer as needed.

8.          Explore reasons for deviation of behavior in cases which have been referred to the principal for serious disciplinary action.

9.          Consult with parents and school staff about student's attendance, achievement, and problem areas.

10.         Provide orientation and screening of students for the joint vocational school programs; develop and maintain career education programs.

11.         Tabulate surveys and schedule students for conferences with college representatives.

12.         Provide material pertaining to college admissions test.

13.         Assist students in completing applications and making necessary arrangements in meeting testing schedules.

14.         Assist with completion senior survey form - a summary concerning student's plans after graduation.

15.         Provide applications for post-secondary education admissions, scholarships and financial aid grants; assist students in completion of forms, transcript preparation.

16.         Write recommendation for students applying for post-secondary education admissions or job placement; assist in job placement.

17.         Conduct a five year annual follow-up study of high school graduates.

18.         Provide preventative guidance activities for classrooms (peer relations, conflict resolution, study skills, substance abuse).

19.         Maintain and builds an occupational information library, including a minimum number of college and technical school catalogues.

20.         Act as a consultant for teachers and parents, plan regular parental meetings, and home visits as needed.

21.         Develop a partnership with community agencies and referral services.

22.         Conduct supervised group testing program with the school staff.

23.         Collect data as requested by the principal.

24.         Actively participate in Student Assistance Program and as a member of the crisis response team.

25.         Coordinate health education programs and activities.

26.         Assist and monitor computation of student dropout, transfer and enrollment ratios;

27.         Assist students and parents regarding college admission process.

28.         Assist students with Educational Development Plans.
