Hempfield School District is a suburban/rural community located approximately 30 miles south of Harrisburg and 5 miles west of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the heart of what is commonly known as Pennsylvania Dutch country. The Pennsylvania Dutch heritage is a part of the Hempfield area and farms still dot the landscape. Hempfield School District extends over 44 square miles and consists of two Townships; East and West Hempfield and two boroughs, East Petersburg and Mountville. Hempfield has a population of over 45,000 residents: minority population of approximately 19% and approximately 25% of our student population is classified as low income. Our families are primarily a mixture of blue collar, and professional with some agricultural. Development in business and industry has caused tremendous growth in the area since geographically, Hempfield is close to major metropolitan areas such as Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. Approximately 7,000 students attend one of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Hempfield students generally score significantly above the mean on state and national assessments. We generally graduate 97% of our students and approximately 64% go on to continuing education beyond high school. Hempfield School District is viewed by the community to be second to none in curriculum offerings, student achievement and in the quality of their instructional staff. The overall community atmosphere is a strength as the schools receive great support from parents and other community groups.
