Principal Responsibilities

 

Essential functions:

Provide leadership in the development of improved classroom instruction, student performance and discipline

Provide a framework for curriculum, teaching practices and the Perspectives Way

Ensure full participation and collaboration between content area & special needs teachers in planning, teaching and other activities related to servicing students with special needs

Develop and manage goals and objectives for curriculum alignment

Review lesson plans and provide constructive feedback

Serve as technical consultant to teachers, principals and other administrators in all areas of special needs

Attend CPS case manager meetings updating teachers and administrators on developments/changes in CPS, IL and Federal polices applicable to special needs education

Facilitate consultations with teachers, specialist and other professionals, as appropriate, to plan and prepare Individualized Educational Programs (IEP) in accordance with goals

Facilitate the creation/coordination of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)

Coordinate compliance and case management

Analyze teacher progress and performance; provide formal and informal evaluations

Provide recommendations for teacher retention

Supervise assigned staff

Provide opportunities for professional development based on individual and organizational growth

Ensure comprehension of student performance on standardized test scores; implement classroom practices to increase test scores

Research and shape best practices, curriculums and school wide projects – provide recommendations to Principal

Develop teacher meeting agenda in conjunction with Administration and facilitate teacher meetings

Coach teachers in learning the A Disciplined Life way of teaching

Duties as assigned in support of A Disciplined Life

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Special Education; Masters Degree in Social Work, Nursing or Management preferred

Special education training and experience in areas of Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance and Cognitive Disabilities

National certification in Case Management or ability to obtain certification within the first twelve months of employment

10 years experience in the transfer of knowledge to middle school or high school students

5 years experience in case management or as special needs teacher

Proven commitment to progressive education

Ability to develop and foster successful teacher/student relationships

Ability to work collaboratively with teams and nurture collegial relationships

Experience evaluating and analyzing others’ work

Proven organizational skills

Proven ability to work well with diverse constituents

Proven ability to verbally communicate ideas effectively

Proven ability to exercise initiative and discretion in the performance of position responsibilities
