School Nurse for Summer Programs

The Summer Programs School Nurses will report to the Director of Health Services and the Administrators for the Summer Community Education and Special Education Programs and will work collaboratively with the Summer Programs Coordinators to insure the safety of summer programs students and staff. The Summer Programs Nurses will be assigned responsibility for an assigned group of students, determined by the enrolled students' needs for nursing services. The school location, dates, and hours of the Summer Program Nurses' assignments will vary based on their assigned program. Responsibilities of the summer program nurses will include the following:
  • Responsible for the health services provided to the students enrolled in the NPS summer community education programs and the special education programs for students in grades preschool- high school.
  • Review student registration forms prior to the start of each program session, to identify students with special health considerations and follow up with parents regarding management of needs and creating a plan
  • Review with program staff the management of students with special health care needs at onset of each program session
  • Coordinate with staff and on-site coordinators of programs located at the schools: Broadmeadow, Eliot, High Rock, and High School, and provide training for delegation of unlicensed personnel regarding the administration of prescription medication during hours without direct service nurse, including medication storage and paperwork.
  • Provide direct nursing services, medically prescribed interventions including medication administration, and response to ill or injured students enrolled in programs in the assigned school, per regulations of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the policies of the NPS.
  • Provide consultation, supervision, follow up, and reporting with unlicensed school personnel of assigned schools, in regards to health and safety issues, including scheduled medication administration, and emergency epinephrine via auto-injector, in accordance to the regulations of the MDPH
  • Provide first aid and emergency medical response to students and staff in programs of assigned school
  • Document on the Nurse Visit Record, a student encounter that requires nursing assessment, medication, intervention, communication, referral, and disposition
  • Communicate with parents, teachers, and medical providers as needed to ensure students' health and safety in programs of assigned schools
  • Manage students with communicable diseases per MDPH guidelines and collaborate with the Needham Health Department as needed
