About
Academy for Urban School Leadership
The Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) is a non-profit education management organization that turnaround chronically failing Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Our mission is to improve student achievement in Chicago's high-poverty, failing schools through a disciplined transformation process built on a foundation of specialty trained AUSL teachers. Our turnaround schools offer students and families the opportunity to be educated in a learning community with high expectations and resources for improved performance. AUSL currently manages 5 CPS neighborhood turnaround high schools. All school staff at an AUSL turnaround school are employees of CPS. The terms of the Board of Education/Chicago Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement shall apply unless waived in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement or in accordance with State law. Our turnaround schools are seeking experienced full-time Special Education teachers who are highly qualified to teach at an AUSL managed – Chicago Public Schools. This position will be staffed with a professional educator who has a proven track record of providing excellent learning experiences that utilize a variety of instructional strategies that deepens students understanding of various concepts. We anticipate candidates with superior content knowledge to collaborate with classroom teachers in planning units that integrate learning and are aligned with state learning standards. AUSL views literacy as essential to helping students develop the reading and writing skills necessary in raising their academic performance. All school staff in AUSL-manages turnaround schools are selected for the challenge of ensuring rapid transformation of a struggling school into a school of excellence.
The teacher hours include the regular school day (start and end times vary by school site). In some AUSL schools, staff may be asked to teach after-school programs for one hour, three days a week; and attend after-school staff professional development for teachers one day per week. Salary and compensation for after-school hours will be paid according to the Chicago Teacher Union (CTU) collective bargaining agreement.
Responsibilities:
• Sets goals for the individualized education plan that are achievable and comparable to a non-special education student's peers in accordance with the State of Illinois IEP that supports a guaranteed and viable curriculum;
• Work collaboratively with the case manager to determine instructional and social needs of students that ensure success while also participating on the multidisciplinary team to promote students' well-being;
• Serve as an advocate for students with special needs;
• Use informal and formal assessments to support the development of students;
• Collaborate with fellow teachers to create a data-driven, learner-centered, friendly and safe environment demonstrating shared responsibility for achievement;
• Design engaging and personalized instruction that nurtures and empowers the whole child resulting in improved student achievement;
• Maintain a classroom that demonstrates discipline, order and rigor;
• Receive professional development and coaching to improve practice from full-time AUSL coaches and school administrators;
• Participate in a mandatory summer professional development.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education
• Current IL Type 10 LBS1 Special Education Teacher Certification (Illinois Provisional certificated accepted for out of state applicants)
• Urban / high need teaching experience (Chicago Public School experience preferred)
• Reside within the city of Chicago (Residency waivers are provided for subject areas deemed by CPS as special needs. Contact CPS directly regarding residency waiver requirements.)

• Permit one or more interviews by a school leaders/selection committee.
