Gambold Prep is a public magnet high school located in Indianapolis, Indiana.   As a new high school, the school will open with grade nine for the 2012-2013 school year slowly adding one grade per year until fall 2015.  This job description covers the minimum requirements for application and major responsibilities.

 

Job Summary

The role of high school counselor is extremely important to the functioning of the school.   Serving as both a college/ university counselor as well as an emotional/ social development counselor, this position requires a broad skill set that blends these two traditional roles.

 

As a future International Baccalaureate (IB) school, the high school counselor is expected to endorse the values of international mindedness, academic excellence, service and leadership.   These values manifest themselves through student growth and reflection, as well as university matriculation.

 

 

Requirements

·          Minimum three years successful employment as a high school counselor

·          Masters degree required, experience in an IB school preferred

·          Valid license covering grades 9-12 with credentials in counseling; out of state applicants must be able to secure an Indiana license

 

Position Qualifications

·          Understanding of student emotional and behavioral development, referral process and state guidelines

·          Ability to counsel students on strengths, areas of development and appropriate academic programs for future study

·          Advocate for equal access to programs and services

·          Capability to help students transition from middle school to high school

·          Demonstrate respect for students and making their success a top priority within a supportive, caring and stimulating learning environment

·          An open, transparent, and communicative style that will enable him or her to relate well to an unusually wide spectrum of constituencies

·          Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to communicate with a diverse community

·          Assigns high importance to teamwork, communication and the building of relationships with all members of the school community

Major Responsibilities

·          Draft and apply counseling policies and structures; support faculty with implementation and delivery of counseling strategies and advising

·          Provide individual and/or group counseling when appropriate; serve as a social worker and parent liaison for counseling issues

·          Lead advisory program focusing on student reflection, skill enhancement, capacity building and goal setting

·          Make appropriate recommendations and/or referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and specialists when appropriate

·          Offer co-curricular activities or clubs that add value and depth to the current academic program

·          Arrange for college visit days; invite recruiters and representatives to campus; arrange standardized testing courses and college application seminars

·          Maintain student records and progress regarding credits and state graduation requirements; use data to help guide student support services

·          Implement and apply educational technology software and hardware including virtual libraries and student resources, online grading and reporting systems, asynchronous learning platforms, laptops and production focused software

·          Assist in scheduling processes and timetabling; work with students on course selection and enrollment

·          Work in collaboration with the Community Liaison to conduct home visits, provide parental support through resources, course and referrals

·          Assist in recruiting and retaining of students by visiting IPS middle schools, attending recruitment affairs and conducting open presentations

·          Work with grant and scholarship o ffering institutions and agencies to facilitate student applications

·          Communicate with all shareholders (students, parents, teachers, administrators, district personnel) regarding student development, policies, activities and opportunities, and current progress of the programs via meetings, letters, blogging and submission of articles to school newsletters and other publications

·          Participate in and lead professional development opportunities, professional learning communities, grade level meetings, subject level meetings, and school wide committees

·          Facilitate presentations, productions, competitions, events and/or activities as appropriate that showcase student learning and achievement (specific expectations to be detailed during the interview process)
