PARAEDUCATOR - English
Language Learners Program- Centralized Registration
PURPOSE:
To serve as an integral member of the instructional team to
provide services to individual students who participate in the
English Language Learners ("ELL") Program provided by the
Stamford Public Schools. This can include services in the ESL
Program, Bilingual Program, the New Arrivals Program or other
programs designed to serve the needs of our non-English Home
Language families.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Reports to the Director of ELL & World Language Programs and
is supervised in the classroom by Certified Staff
Professional
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
·
May work in a particular
classroom assignment or work in a variety of classrooms
throughout the day, based on programmatic needs.
·
Assist the ELL Program in
the handling, operation and care of equipment
used in the classroom,
including media and technology
·
Assist with the supervision
of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods,
field trips, and in other non-classroom activities.
·
Check provided paperwork and
follow appropriate registration procedures.
·
Serve as the chief source of
information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the
absence of the regular teacher.
·
Exhibits a clear
understanding of techniques and strategies for working with ELL
students and uses them when applicable
·
Alert the teacher(s) regarding any special information related to
an individual student.
·
Maintain the same high level
of ethical behavior and sensitivity of information about students
as is expected of a certified teacher.
·
Participate in professional
development training programs, as required.
·
Perform related duties as
appropriate for the position as assigned by the Director of ELL
and World Languages.
·
Guide independent study,
enrichment work and remedial work set and assigned by the
teacher.
·
Contact families under the
supervision of a certified teacher to inform families of
appropriate placement.
·
Contact families under the
supervision of a certified teacher to schedule appointments for
language proficiency screening.
·
Assist in providing a
well-organized, smoothly functioning new arrival environment.
·
Assists certified teacher in
the maintenance of appropriate documentation as required by
federal law on ELLs.
·
Assist certified personnel
with initial language screening and identification of ELLs
·
Approach student proficiency
in English with patience and support
·
Perform other related
duties, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
·
Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to
work productively with children.
·
Demonstrated ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions
effectively.
·
Must exhibit good judgment,
patience, tact and courtesy.
·
Physical condition
commensurate with the demands of, at a minimum, the essential
functions of the position, particularly when assigned to
kindergarten positions
·
Exhibits proficiency in
basic reading, math, writing, and speaking English and preferably
Spanish
·
Preference given to
individuals who are fluent in Spanish or other targeted language,
based upon openings
·
Utilizes and maintains
ethical practices for confidential communication about
students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
·
Must meet NCLB compliance
requirements, as applicable.
·
Must possess or be willing
to acquire the skills necessary to support needs associated
English language learners
·
Experience/training in
working with children preferred.

required to reach with hands and arms.
·
The employee must
occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
·

COMPENSATION:
As per contract, the starting salary for paraeducators is
$17,337.06 for the 2011-12 school year.
