Job Description
MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
The middle school counselors function in a number of areas and
have a great deal of responsibility in these various
functions. Teachers should become familiar with the
services of the counselors' office and learn how to use the
information available through that office to do a better job in
the classroom.
Each of the counselors will be responsible for one class
throughout the middle school years. This responsibility
shall include educational planning, pre-enrollment evaluation,
enrollment procedures, testing and test interpretation, the
development of levels of expectation for individual students,
grade interpretation, maintenance of cumulative records, research
and follow-up procedures within the school and with the senior
high schools, attendance accounting and follow-up procedures,
personal adjustment problems, parent-school relationships,
teacher-pupil relationships, and input into curriculum planning,
activities planning, schedule development and other areas as
designated by the building principal.
Specific duties may include:
1. Testing and its interpretation to students and
parents
2. Attendance
3. Preventive counseling (initial referrals)
4. Schedule changes
5. Late enrollments
6. Pre-enrollment and enrollment
Teachers are encouraged to use the services of the guidance
office for any concerns that may affect the academic or social
development of the student.
Problem areas may manifest themselves in behaviors such
as:
1. Behavior problems
2. Breaking school rules
3. Failure to bring materials to class
4. Tardiness
5. Non-motivation and may be viewed as symptoms of a
counseling problem
Persistent non-productive or disruptive behaviors may well
lead to discipline referrals to the office of the Assistant
Principal.
