Assistive Technology Specialist:

 

The Assistive Technology Specialist provides assistance in assessment with recommendations for assistive technology in conjunction with professionals from various disciplines; provides technical support and training on specific technology equipment to students, families, staff and related providers; coordinates evaluation, acquisition, testing, and installation of assistive devices and technology solutions; maintains inventory records; and serves as a resource to school personnel requiring assistance with assistive technology topics. 

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Serve assistive technology and augmentative communication needs of member districts.
  2. Attend network assistive technology meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  3. Prepare and conduct workshops and trainings on a variety of assistive technology topics, computer access, and cutting edge technologies.
  4. Provide consultation services for students using assistive technology in District programs.
  5. Guide team in use of SETT process for consideration of assistive technology as requested.
  6. Provide recommendations, assist in selection, modification, and implementation of low, mid, and high level technology solutions and devices.
  7. Attend IEP meetings as necessary.
  8. Prepare and conduct individual technology consultations/demonstrations for students, parents, and staff.
  9. Assist in identification of needs, coordinate purchases and organize/track assistive technology for the District.
  10. Research and write assistive technology articles/updates.

Qualifications:

  1. Licensure by the Minnesota Dept. of Education in Special Education or related service required.
  2. Familiarity and ability to work with students with disabilities.
  3. Thorough understanding of assistive technology and evaluation strategies for persons with disabilities.
  4. Knowledge of how students with various disabilities may access curriculum.
  5. Knowledge of assistive technology tools (specialized software/hardware) that provide access to curriculum, assist with communication, or other usage.
  6. Understands various technology formats, platforms, and compatibility issues.
  7. Excellent teaching and presentation skills.
  8. Ability to travel to multiple school sites during the week--flexible schedule.
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  10. Excellent networking skills and knowledge of available resources and suppliers of assistive technology.

 

Salary:  As per teacher contract

 

Contract Length: 2012-2013 school year, continuing contract
