Design Overview

Academy is a school developed using the Ten Common Principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES).  Academy emphasizes that: all students learn to use their minds well through teaching and modeling good habits of mind; all students achieve at high levels; all students have a personalized educational experience through the inquiry model of instruction.  Our core practices in student achievement; classroom practice, organizational practice, communications and leadership work together to ensure student learning, student voice, and teamwork.  Classroom Practice.

 

At Academy students will learn to use their minds well by learning and developing good habits of mind.  The habits of mind are perspective, analysis, imagination, empathy, communication, commitment, and joy.  These habits will be developed through the primary use of inquiry-based pedagogy.  Inquiry-based practices will be used to guide the organization of curriculum and the depth of skills, knowledge and understanding of students, leading to the creation of demonstrations of mastery of learning.  Through the method of inquiry, teachers and students will be active participants in learning, enabling teachers to know their students better and raising the level of student understanding.  As a result of effective classroom practices and pedagogy a culture of respect, decency and trust will be fostered and nurtured.

  • Design, implement, and evaluate SBI Unit plans that align with state and district standards, school curriculum map, and portfolio and graduation requirements.
  • Curriculum development and implementation using Inquiry-Based instruction.
  • Develop lesson plans that ensure that instruction is paced well, engages all students and ensures good classroom management.
  • Collaborate in the design, implementation and evaluation of integrated unit planning.
  • Develop and use rubrics to assess student work.
  • Ongoing assessment of student Achievement including development of Exhibitions of student work.
  • Use a range of instructional practices to give students the support they need to meet standards.
  • Make instructional plans for teaching reading to support in-depth learning. Make instructional plans for teaching writing to support in-depth learning.

 

Organizational Practice

Skyview Academy will orient its organizational structures and practices such as schedule, professional development, decision-making, and teacher collaboration to directly support teaching and learning.  Staff will have multiple obligations (teacher-counselor-manager) and a sense of commitment to the entire school.   The Skyview Academy organization will foster a professional learning community that focuses on student learning and school culture.  Teachers and school leaders will collect data to understand student achievement and assess school practices to make informed decisions about school issues.

Community Connection

Skyview Academy will develop and sustain a meaningful interactive relationship with its communities (parents, students, district, business, Public Education and Business Coalition, Coalition of Essential Schools, neighbors) so that all members understand and support the work of the school.  Through supporting programs that connect school learning to the community such as service learning, internships and field trips, students will develop a strong sense of community and world relationships.

Skyview Academy will foster leadership from a broad array of constituents - students, teachers, parents, and other community members so that the people, the vision, and the work of the school are sustained and developed over time.  This group of school leaders will create, articulate, share and revise the vision when necessary.  Leaders will model, coach, demonstrate and promote ideas of inclusion, equity, and personalization.  Shared leadership will allow others in the learning community to participate in and have ownership in their school.

Structures

Skyview Academy will organize its day in blocks of time that will facilitate integration of learning across the academic disciplines and a common plan time for teacher teams.  Staff will be organized by grade level teams to facilitate: students knowing their teacher well and teachers knowing their students well, personalization of instruction, common space, common instructional practices and expectations, projects, service learning, and flexible student groupings.  Our school's daily schedule and our yearlong calendar will be developed collaboratively within the design/implementation team.
