Requirements:   Certification in Special Education.  Ability to assume an IEP caseload, conduct IPE meetings and work collaboratively with classroom teachers.   Strong communication skills required.

  SOUTH DAKOTA TEACHER CERTIFICATION WITH ENDORSEMENT IN SUBJECT AREA.  CERTIFICATION IN SPECIAL EDUCATION.

 

Job Description:   

 

1.       Participates in identification, assessment of IEP development and delivery for eligible students as identified by district policy and procedure.

2.       Evaluates, selects and modifies resources and activities consistent with instructional activities and individual student needs.

3.       Maintains student records regarding special education process in compliance with district, state and federal requirements.

4.       Plans for learning needs and abilities of each student.

5.       Prepares plans that correlate with specific instructional and IEP objectives.

6.       Selects instructional methods and learning activities that are compatible with content, learning styles and student abilities.

7.       Plans evaluation procedures consistent with instructional objectives to document progress.

8.       Promotes educational achievement for all students.

9.       Provides opportunities for students to participate actively and successfully.

10.      Respects and shows sensitivity to individual needs and concerns.

11.      Provides opportunities for students to assume responsibility and develop independence.

12.      Maintains a supportive environment that avoids sarcasm and negative criticism.

13.      Establishes a climate of courtesy and respect, encourages slow and reluctant students, and establishes and maintains positive rapport with students.

14.      Uses techniques to prevent off-task behavior.

15.      Maximizes amount of time available for instruction.

16.      Recognizes individual and cultural diversity of students.

17.      Serves as a positive role model in the school environment.

18.      Communicates with colleagues and parents in a professional manner.

19.      Participates in ongoing professional growth activities.

20.      Promotes the education profession.

21.      Communicates effectively and professionally with parents and students.

22.      Evaluates and provides feedback on student progress during instruction.

23.      Uses techniques to check understanding and progress of students at regular intervals.

24.      Works cooperatively with an education assistant and provides classroom leadership.

25.      Organizes classroom materials and manages students.

26.      Manages student behavior.

27.      Complies with policies, operating procedures, requirements and special education law.

28.     Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families.

29.      Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
