The Needham Public Schools is seeking to fill a new administrative position to fill the new role of Special Education Coordinator. Each elementary and middle school will have a designated full-time Special Education Coordinator in each building to perform the responsibilities as described below. While each new position will be paid full-time as an administrator, a percentage of time will be dedicated to direct service.
The Coordinator will have assigned responsibilities
for direct service provision as determined by the building principal and
director. Under the direction
of the Special Education Director PreK-8 and the Principal, the Coordinator will be responsible for implementing
and managing effective, compliant and cost efficient special education services
for students in her/his assigned school.
Essential
Functions and Duties of the Position: The essential functions and duties listed below
are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be
performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude
them from the position if work is similar, related or a logical assignment to
the position.
- Teaching or other direct service responsibilities as determined by the
principal and director
- Manage special education eligibility process, including chairing team
meetings
- Ensure IEPs meet all regulatory and district standards, are written to
reflect best practice, reflect high quality programming and are implemented
with integrity
- Work with building-based teams to develop and implement efficient and
effective service delivery models reflecting best practice
- Manage complex and challenging cases, by maintaining effective parent,
staff, advocate and outside evaluator contact
- Work collaboratively with the principal and curriculum coordinators to
provide in-building technical assistance and to develop and implement
high-quality professional development for all staff
- Identify and request authorization from the Director for any service
not provided by Needham Public Schools
- Observe, supervise and evaluate special education staff ensuring high
quality special education service delivery
- Supervise and evaluate Teacher Assistants
- Collaborate with principal to advance a Response to Intervention (RTI)
program in the school
- Participate in and contribute to student support team meetings
- Plan for and contribute to effective transitions for students and their
families
- Work with other special education coordinators and directors to insure
consistency, cohesion and coordination of practices across the district
Education
and Experience:
- Master's Degree, with specialization in special education
- DESE License as an Administrator of Special Education
Skills,
Abilities & Knowledge:
- Depth of knowledge regarding special education laws, regulations,
processes and procedures
- Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills enabling
information sharing and the development of trusting relationships with parents,
staff, outside evaluators, advocates and administrators
- Skill in interpreting assessments and determining educational
interventions in response to a learning profile
- Demonstrated skill in meeting facilitation, case management,
communication and pedagogy
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage the special education
referral and team process
- Experience supervising and evaluating staff
- Teaching or other special education service skill that will benefit the
district

This is a 195
day position and part of the Unit B
