Writing Center Director
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have at least two years of
experience either in the high school classroom as an English
teacher or working in a management capacity in a writing center
in an urban setting, or teaching writing in a non-traditional
setting.
Ideal candidate should be comfortable committing to NLCP for at
least three years.
B.A. in English, Education, or a related field required.
Graduate degree preferred.
Responsibilities:

Writing
Center
o
Manage space, logistics, and personnel of the Peer
Writing Coach Program
§
Teach the Writing Coach Course & manage independent
study students
§
Build on and revise curriculum to train Peer Writing
Coaches in Writing Coach Course
§
Solicit recommendations from faculty for Coaches, select
students through an application process, and schedule the class
period and room
§
Supervise and ensure quality of service from Writing
Coaches after they finish the course and continue coaching
§
Keep records of all conferences and provide statistics
to interested parties periodically
§
Organize Writing Center space for productivity and
efficiency and decorate it with writing-related sources of
inspiration/motivation
o
Serve as a resource to students for writing help
and motivation
§
Work one-on-one with students as needed
§
Make available supplementary materials about research,
the writing process, mechanics of writing, or materials to
serve as inspiration or encouragement
§
Update the Writing Center website with helpful resources
for students
§
Keep students aware of writing contests or local events
of interest
o
Serve as a resource to faculty for writing and
research-related needs
§
Prepare classroom workshops on writing topics at
teachers' requests
§
Offer research workshops and materials for Grade level
projects
§
Come into classes as needed to provide an extra set of
hands/eyes during independent work time
§
Assist with the Writing ACT preparation
o
Build relationships with the larger Writing Center
community
§
Continue to form a partnership with the UIC Writing
Center and
others
§
Build connections to the national and international
Writing Center community (particularly the Chicagoland
Organization of Secondary School Writing Centers)
§
Coordinate volunteers wishing to donate time to the NLCP
Writing Center
o
Collaborate with the
Writing Center Director at the Christiana Campus
§
Personalize the Writing
Center model to the Collins Campus throughout the year
§
Develop methods for
bridging the Collins and Christiana Writing Centers throughout
the year and sharing best practices
§
Work with literacy team
and librarians to help advance a positive culture surrounding
reading and writing
§
Support faculty in
writing across the disciplines by creating a database of
teaching resources (like the Rise through Reading website)
§
Organize and facilitate
professional development opportunities related to teaching
writing and research
§
Collaborate across
departments to create a common language for talking about
writing and share best practices for effective prompts and
helping students with the writing process
§
Create database of
resources for students about strategies for different stages of
the writing process, different styles
§
Develop school-wide
writing-related events for students
§
Create regular writing contests sponsored by the Writing
Center and focusing
on different writing skills

Winning entries to be
published in an in-house writing publication
§
Regularly publish exemplary student writing online or display
in public
places around school
§
Think creatively about ways to open students' eyes to the
myriad of careers that involve writing (and invite
speakers?)
o
Collaborate with
Librarian
§
Develop schedule that
provides coverage for both Writing Center and library space and
minimizes additional time required by each party
§
Serve as a liaison
between Christiana director and Collins librarian to help
coordinate programming and activities
