Substitute Sign Language Interpreter


Substitute Sign Language Interpreters will be called to replace an absent district Sign Language Interpreter on an as needed basis.  The length of assignment may be half or full day, on a per day basis.  Assignment could be from preschool through high school to work with an individual student or in a classroom setting pending need.  Depending on the assignment the substitute may be in multiple buildings and/or at different grade levels in a day, therefore own transportation may be necessary.

 

Location:            Lincoln Center

 

Responsibilities:   (1) Provide interpreting and/or transliterating in mainstream classes as assigned; (2) Provide interpreting and/or transliterating for extracurricular activities, parent meetings, conferences as needed; (3) Provide tutoring and/or not taking services for hearing impaired students when necessary and when interpreting is not needed; (4) Participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress of the individual educational plan, providing insight on the status of communication strategies in the mainstream classroom; (5) Provide information to the classroom teacher, deaf and hearing students and other staff to maximize benefit of interpreting services; (6) Meet regularly with classroom teacher and teacher of hearing impaired concerning communication needs of the students; (7) Participate in professional improvement activities; (8) Ability to interpreter/transliterate (expressive and voice) at a normal conversational rate, American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign English; (9) Ability to interpret/transliterate at the level of the student’s understanding.

 

Qualifications: (1) High School diploma or equivalent; (2) 60 College Credits or Associate Degree; (3) Current Illinois State Board of Education Sign Language Interpreter Certificate; either Initial or Standard Certificate is acceptable for shore-term assignment; (4) For a long-term substitute assignment a Standard Certificate is required; (5) Ability to pass the paraprofessional basic skills test administered in the Human Resources Office, 1201 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, IL 60085

 

Salary:   $30.47 per hour
