POSITION SUMMARY:           

   Assist children to develop the skills for lifetime fitness and recreational activities, and provide experiences that lead to

   social maturity and physical well being.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assess student fitness continuously, in order to design appropriate instruction.  Administer standardized and criterion referenced tests as needed.
  • Provide instruction that is appropriate for all students, including modified instruction as needed. Differentiate instruction for grade levels.
  • Establish a safe, but challenging, environment for students, including reasonable guidelines and appropriate consequences for behavior.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the applicable course of study and implement it, in cooperation with other staff members as appropriate.
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans that demonstrate knowledge of the course(s) of study and contain sound teaching methods.
  • Schedule instructional time according to State, district and building guidelines.
  • Use resources and materials effectively.  Make recommendations to the Principal for the purchase of physical education equipment and materials.
  • Arrange special experiences for students as appropriate; for example, bowling and ice skating.
  • Organize and guide a field day at the end of the school year.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records, according to district and building rules and professional judgment; for example, attendance, grades, fitness records and kindergarten assessments.
  • Prepare adequately for substitute teachers, including the provision of appropriate safety precautions for non-physical education trained teachers.
  • Observe the adopted daily building schedule, including starting and ending times for teachers and students, and perform all assigned duties, for example, cafeteria, recess, bus, hallway, field trips, emergency drills.
  • Attend all teachers’ meetings, unless excused.
  • Serve on committees and co-curricular activities in a professionally responsible manner.
  • Report to parents, in writing, at the intervals established by the district and/or building.  Be available for conferences upon request.
  • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with teachers, administrators and other support staff; for example, attend planning meetings, and implement individual plans.
  • Report student health and safety concerns to the appropriate personnel.
  • Implement the instructions of medical practitioners, and maintain the confidentiality of those records.
  • Learn and implement the administrative procedures associated with the teaching assignment; for example, applying for a field trip.
  • Engage in continuous professional growth, including attending training sessions as assigned.  Complete a professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the school district.
  • Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
  • Serve as a role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as a consultant for the selection of playground or other recreational equipment.
  • Work with student teachers if needed.
  • Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.
  • Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in physical education from an accredited college or university.
  • Appropriate State of Ohio teaching certificate/license.
  • Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of child development, age appropriate activities and positive behavior management strategies.
  • Well-developed observational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in many different situations, including teams.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Well-developed organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Basic knowledge of computer technology, or willingness to acquire and appropriately apply such knowledge.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
  • Physical education equipment.
  • Various office machines, such as calculators, copiers, laminating machines.
  • Computers.
  • Various instructional equipment, such as video recorders and players, tape recorders, slide projectors, CD players, microphones.
  • Assist with devices for students with disabilities; for example, lifts, wheelchairs and adapted physical education equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Exposure to blood or other bodily fluids and tissue.
  • Exposure to hazardous athletic equipment.
  • Close proximity to people running.
  • Potential exposure to unruly people.
  • Must be available for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather; that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled days, except calamity days.
  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, reach, lift and stretch with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, and kneel.
  • Regular requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment up to 50 lbs. and assist children on athletic equipment.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Length of Employment: One Year Limited Contract
  • Salary and Fringe Benefits: Based on current negotiated salary and benefit schedule
