JOB DESCRIPTION:
Fully implements the formal math curriculum utilizing diversified sound educational strategies/techniques to meet the diagnosed needs of all students within a classroom setting conducive to learning/discovery and demonstrated achievement. Receives general supervision from the building principal and technical supervision from the Instructional Specialist for mathematics.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Instructional Program:
a. Works with Instructional Specialist to implement, strengthen, improve program.
b. Keeps informed of new developments in curriculum, instruction methods and computer programs.
c. Implements new and established programs.
d. Provides students with diversified learning activities.
e. Helps interpret the curriculum to parents, students and staff.
2. Classroom Supervision:
a. Teaches students good study habits.
b. Promotes positive self-concept in each student; provides encouragement to each student to develop his or her full potential.
c. Understands social and emotional adjustments of students.
d. Promotes student awareness and respect for different cultures.
e. Creates appropriate learning atmosphere in classroom; maintains classroom order.
f. Maintains student attendance and tardiness records.
g. Makes evaluation reports upon request.
h. Maintains records of individual student’s progress through assignments, quizzes and projects.
i. Keeps inventory of materials, equipment and supplies.
3. Communication:
a. Maintains contact with parents and guidance personnel as needed to evaluate student’s academic and social growth.
b. Takes initiative to work cooperatively with other school departments; shares ideas among faculty members and administration.
c. Participates as appropriate in school-community affairs.

4. Professional Responsibility:
a. Works in the interest of the students' physical and emotional welfare.
b. Accepts and incorporates suggestions for classroom improvement.
c. Participates in professional growth by attending workshops, taking courses, reading new literature, observing other teachers, attending inservice training meetings, reviewing computer programs and offering in-service to staff.
5. Other:
a. Assists in determining ongoing budgetary needs of department.
b. Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
CT certification in K-8, Middle School Math and/or Mathematics 7-12. Ability to work with multicultural student population. Knowledge and skills required would generally be acquired with a Bachelor's degree in Education or in a field appropriate to mathematics. Knowledge and mastery of content area of math. Knowledge of higher order cognitive strategies. Knowledge and use of assessment and diagnostic strategies. Proper use of manipulatives. Knowledge and use of computer technology. Human relations skills to work effectively with students, parents, school administrators and school staff. Ability to prepare effective plans and maintain excellent discipline. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of people.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Extensive use of computer technology preferred. Fluency in Spanish preferred.
COMPENSATION: PER N.F.T. CONTRACT
EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION: 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR
