PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Direct and manage the instructional program and supervise operations and personnel at the campus level. Provide instructional leadership to ensure high standards of instruction. Direct the implementation of district policies and instructional programs. Manage the operation of all campus activities. Supervise students and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Master's degree or higher
Texas Professional Mid-Management, Administrator, or Professional Principal Certificate
Certified Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS) appraiser
Valid Texas Teaching certificate
Experience:
Administrative experience as Principal preferred
Three years exemplary teaching experience or comparable leadership experience is essential
Successful teaching experience at the secondary level preferred

Thorough understanding of school administrative operations
Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Management
  • Develop and implement plans to increase student achievement, attendance, and graduation rates.
  • Develop and evaluate campus education programs.
  • Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers to pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  • Identify, use, evaluate and promote appropriate technologies to enhance and support instruction and curriculum leading to high levels of student engagement and achievement.
  • Develop a data driven focus on students and on the quality of work provided to students.
  • Monitor instructional and managerial processes systematically and use findings for corrective action, improvement, and recognition of success.
  • Focus on results and make data driven decisions while promoting the need for change for student success within the organization.
  • Work with staff and plan, implement, and evaluate the curriculum on a systematic basis that aligns with approved district programs.
  • Facilitate the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.
School/Organizational Climate
  • Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.
  • Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff.

School/Organizational Improvement
  • Participate in development of campus plans with staff, parents, and community members.
  • Develop, maintain, and use appropriate information systems and records necessary for attainment of campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.
  • Develop and put systems into place that ensure programs and strategies are evaluated for effectiveness.
Personnel Management
  • Interview, select, and orient new staff. Approve all personnel assigned to campus.
  • Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences.
  • Define expectations for staff performance with regard to instructional strategies, classroom management, and communication with the public.
  • Use developmental supervision effectively and comprehensively with all staff with focus on the work provided to students.
  • Promote mutual resolution of conflict utilizing pertinent data in negotiation, mediation, and counseling strategies.
  • Devote time and resources to the support of professional development needs and ensure that the campus maintains direction and focus for all staff.
  • Make appropriate recommendations relative to personnel hiring and placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal.
  • Present for colleagues, teachers, and support staff a positive role model.
Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management
  • Adhere to local, state and federal rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Administer the daily organization of the school including class scheduling, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activities, developing and maintaining calendar, teacher and student handbooks.
  • Work with department heads and faculty to compile annual budget requests based on documented program needs.
  • Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conduct inventories, maintains records; and verify receipts for such materials.
  • Conduct safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  • Direct and manage extracurricular and intramural programs including management of multiple activity funds.
  • Coordinate transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
Student Management
  • Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
  • Develop a student management system that focuses on student engagement and results in positive student behavior to enhance school climate.
  • Ensure that school rules and regulations are observed and that the Student Code of Conduct is applied consistently and fairly to all students.
  • Coordinate and provide adequate supervision of students during non-instructional periods.
  • Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  • Conduct conferences with parent, students, and teachers concerning student issues and discipline.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Observe professional ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency Code of Ethics.
  • Remain current in effective research-based strategies for school improvement.
School/Community Relations
  • Articulate the school's mission to the community and solicit its support.
  • Demonstrate awareness of District/community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
  • Initiate and support activities for parent and community involvement.
  • Utilize strategies to engage the community in useful dialogue and inquiry.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Requires occasional district/state-wide travel and occasional prolonged/irregular hours.
