CERTIFIED:
DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
Overview
:
The Director of Special Education is directly responsible to
the Deputy Superintendent in Charge of Special
Services. Likewise, he/she reports to the Special
Education Joint Committee of the East Saint Louis Area Joint
Agreement which is comprised of the Superintendent of each
district and a School Board Member of each District. The
Director will be in charge of the total program provided for
all exceptional children age three (3) to twenty-one (21) of
Districts 188 and 189 (except the Gifted). The Director
must be state-approved.
Desired Qualifications include but not limited to:
Illinois Type 75 (Administrative)
Certificate
Director of Special Education
Endorsement
Working knowledge and experience in positive,
research-based behavior intervention strategies
A history of strong leadership and
communication skills
Skilled in staff evaluation and group
facilitation
Successful experience in dealing with
professional staff and parents
A minimum of five years experience in public
education, part of which must have been in teaching and/or
supervision.
Training in crisis prevention
Responsibilities:
Plan and implement programs and placement for
children ages three (3) to twenty-one (21) who have
disabilities or are
homebound.
Direct the work of the Special Education
staff. Conduct a Comprehensive Needs Assessment
annually.
Prepare a budget for the Joint Agreement and
submit the same to the Special Education Committee of the
East Saint Louis Area Joint Agreement.
Plan in-service training programs for staff
members of Special Education
Prepare all local, regional and state reports
and reimbursement claims which are required and submit same
to the Special Education Joint Committee of
the East Saint Louis Area Joint Agreement, as
well as to the District 189 Deputy Superintendent of
Curriculum & Administration.
