QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Preferred, not required, 30 semester
hours of credit from a recognized institution of higher
education
2. Previous clerical experience in a
library, media center or elementary school
2. Good character and good health
3. United States citizenship
4. Subject to that portion of the School
Code requiring physical fitness and freedom from communicable
disease and the statute requiring annual evidence from
tuberculosis
5. Additional State and NCLB approval as
required by the State Teacher Certification Board of the
ISBE.

JOB GOALS: To provide a well-organized,
smoothly functioning media center environment in which
students and staff can make effective use of the media center
as a learning resource.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists students and staff in the
selection of books and other instructional materials, and
makes center materials available to supplement the
instructional program
2. Informs teachers and other staff
members concerning new materials acquired by the media
center
3. Maintains a comprehensive and efficient
system for cataloging all library
4. Types and processes orders, reports,
bibliographies, forms, library schedules, letters to
publishers, catalogue cards and the like
5. Writes notices to students concerning
overdue books and collects fines for such books
6. Makes simple repairs on damaged books
and processes more severely damaged books for repair at the
bindery
7. Assists in the annual inventory of
media center materials and the preparation of lists of
missing books and books to be discarded
8. Creates displays, interest centers,
exhibits, and similar motivational devices and changes them
frequently in the individual school media center
9. Assists students in making proper use
of center equipment and materials
10. Assists the classroom teacher in
maintaining proper student discipline, operating audio-visual
equipment, and developing library science skills
11. Reads to small groups of
children
12. Supervises student media center aides
in the performance of their duties
13. Operates the circulation desk and
keeps complete circulation files
14. Maintains current inventory of
supplies and suggests items for acquisition as needed
15. Monitors student attendance and
utilization of the media center
16. Oversees the general neatness and
attractiveness of the media center and its displays
17. Performs such other tasks as the
Program Coordinator may from time to time assign
18. Facilitates and coordinates the
procedures for intermedia center loans of materials and
equipment
19. Maintains a continuous and up-to-date
knowledge of selected microcomputer and video equipment and
assists students and staff with programs and systems
20. Creates an open door policy to provide
assistance to all staff members regarding latest equipment
and materials acquired by the media center
All staff shall be held responsible by the
Board of Education of District 98, as part of their
employment responsibilities, to take whatever action that is
appropriate when their intervention is necessary at any time
they are on school grounds to provide for the safety and/or
security of students, staff and visitors and for the
protection of school property.
