Requirements:
CT Certification in Administration and Supervision (092)
CT Certification in Comprehensive Special Education, K-12 (065 or 165)
Demonstrated leadership ability in special education services

Service Orientation
The Director, Special Services must have a genuine interest in serving the school community of students, faculty, and parents. He/she must be sincerely committed to the welfare of the school community as well as capable of the self-reflection required for individual growth and school leadership. He/she must be able to promote a school culture featuring collaboration and professionalism in the service of student learning and continuous improvement.
Professionally Knowledgeable
The Director, Special Services must be well versed in special education law and effective instructional practices as well as in collecting and interpreting evidence of student performance and program needs. He/she must be an effective communicator and empathic listener. He/she must be able to understand multiple perspectives and broker common understandings and must be able to foster healthy relationships between school and home through problem-solving that emphasizes common interests.
Responsibilities:

Supervise and evaluate special education teachers, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathologists and assistive technology specialist

Coordinate, monitor and evaluate programs to ensure appropriate articulation and sharing of services

Serve as liaison and compliance officer with the state for special education and other special grant programs

Function as advisor to staff members, students and parents on special education concerns

Work under the direction of the superintendent to establish policies and regulations to coordinate the operation of all special education services

Chair PPTs and represent the Board of Education in all due process proceedings

Provide and monitor contracted assessment and services in all related service areas (speech, auditory processing, psychiatric and psychological counseling, special transportation, placement in other public and private facilities)

Supervise submission of the IDEA grant

Develop and supervise the Child Study Team, Student Assistance Team and Planning and Placement Team process
