  ASSISTANT SPECIAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR PREK-8:  Start Date: July 1, 2012
Under the direction of the Special Education Director PreK-8, the Assistant Director will be responsible for developing and implementing effective, compliant and cost efficient special education services for students in Needham.
 
Essential Functions and Duties of the Position: The essential functions and duties listed below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
  • With building principals, supervise and evaluate related service providers
  • Manage DESE Grant 274, Special Education Program Improvement, to insure professional development activities are aligned and reflect district priorities
  • Supervise specialized programs and related service providers, K-12, as determined by the Director of Student Development, to ensure alignment and effectiveness and efficiency of programs in the district
  • Manage out of district school placements for students preschool through grade 8
  • Supervise special education coordinators, as determined by the Director of Special Education PreK-8
  • Manage, develop and implement efficient and effective Extended School Year programs PreK-post-graduate
  • Resolve parent concerns through effective and timely communication
  • Through coordination with the Director of Technology, build instructional capacity in the district through management of assistive technology evaluations, professional development and materials' requests to ensure non-duplication of technology resources
Education and Experience:
  • Master's Degree, with specialization in special education
  • DESE License as an Administrator of Special Education
Skills, Abilities & Knowledge:
  • Depth of knowledge regarding special education laws, regulations, processes and procedures
  • Able to solve problems in a timely manner and knowing when to seek others' input prior to decision-making
  • Strong inter-personal and written/oral communication skills enabling information sharing and the development of trusting relationships with parents, staff and administrators
  • Proven supervision and evaluation skills
  • Able to manage budgets and grants
  • Knowledge of characteristics of effective and cost-efficient special education services
  • Able to identify and analyze data to improve effectiveness and efficiency of special education services
Salary and Benefits:
