ELL SIFE Teacher for the Secondary Level

ELL Summer Program- Current SPS Teachers Only

General Statement

Provide a summer school class that responds to the immediate social, cultural, and linguistic needs of immigrant adolescents with limited or interrupted formal schooling.  Teachers will deliver lessons that build background knowledge, pre-teach vocabulary and develop literacy skills necessary to be successful in mainstream content area classrooms.  ESL teachers will target both content and English language objectives to promote language development.

These positions are available pending operating budget and grant funding approval.

Major Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the core subject area to be taught
• Knowledge of human growth and development as it relates to the teaching-learning process
• Uses SIOP model to plan instruction to achieve selected objectives
• Effectively communicates with students
• Effectively assesses students needs and progress
• Establishes a positive learning environment

Minimum Qualifications:

• Connecticut Certified and are either Content certified  teachers (Math, Social Studies, Science, English) and/or ELL Teachers
• Familiar with TESOL Standards and the district's content area curriculum  
• Teachers trained in the SIOP model, or those who have TESOL certification are strongly preferred.

The program will run July 2nd through July 27 ^th from 8:00-11:30.  Teacher(s) will be assigned to work up to four weeks depending on their content area expertise and the needs of the students.

Compensation

• 2012-2013 Summer School Hourly Rate per teacher contract
