Position
Title:
Middle School Reading Specialist
Immediate Supervisor:

Focus:
Works with students and teachers to strengthen
literacy achievement
1.
Acts as a resource to all teachers and works
with students as assigned or needed.
2.
Analyzes and evaluates the results of school
data with the principal and teachers to determine school
literacy needs and to develop building improvement goals, both
short- and long-term.
3.
Identifies and assists teachers
across content areas in the implementation of best practices in
instruction.
4.
Provides effective professional
development on a regular basis for school staff, including full
staff, grade level team, content area, and individual
teachers.
5.
Works collaboratively with other
district reading specialists to develop and lead workshops as
requested.
6.
Prepares and presents reports as
needed at the building level.
7.
Participates on the building's RtI
team and district's literacy related committees as requested or
needed (e.g., textbook selection)
8.
Coordinates the administration of
literacy related assessments, such as the AIMSweb
Reading-CBM.
9.
Together with the school
psychologist, analyzes and interprets data for administrative,
grade level or teacher meetings and coordinates appropriate
interventions.
10.
Works with counselors and on transition teams
between elementary and high school for placement
decisions.
11.
Provides intensive instruction to struggling
readers, as assigned or determined by need.
12.
Provides individual and small group instruction
through "push in" and "pull out" programs, as needed.
13.
Collaborates with RtI team to identify at-risk
or struggling students, as well as advanced learners, and plans
appropriate programming.
14.
Observes/work with students in classrooms to
gain further insight for appropriate instruction.
15.
Diagnoses student needs for specific reading
interventions/advanced placement based on formal and informal
measures;
e.g., AIMSweb, MAP, ISAT, etc.
16.
Monitors as appropriate struggling student's
progress in an intervention and modifies programming as
needed.
17.
Participates in Special Services, ELL, and REACH
meetings when students are being considered for special
instructional programming.
