PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To contribute to a well-organized and smoothly functioning environment in which students can take full advantage of the handicapped children’s instructional program and available resource materials.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

1.   High school diploma or GED certificate

2.       Meet State certification requirements

3.       Minimum 48 college hours

Special Knowledge/Skills:

1.   Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for the work to be performed

2.       Work well with students with disabilities

3.       Ability to communicate effectively

4.       Follow written and verbal directives

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1.   Prepare for classroom activities under the direction of the Special Education teacher.

2.   Work with small groups of handicapped students to reinforce materials initially introduced by the teacher and assist students who need special attention.

3.   Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work planned by the teacher for handicapped students.

4.   Arrange audiovisual equipment and assist with classroom experiments, demonstrations, etc.

5.   Check notebooks, correct papers and supervise testing and make-up work.

6.   Assist in remedial drill work, reading and storytelling.

7.   Assist small groups of handicapped students in the learning resources centers.

8.   Keep records of student performance and progress in reading, language development, math or other skills and assist in program evaluation.

9.   Prepare visual aids and bulletin board displays for the teacher.

10.  Locate reference or teaching materials.

11.  Organize, prepare and distribute school and classroom supplies.

12.  Participate in inservice training program.

13.  Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.

14.  Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.

15. Perform other work-related duties as assigned by Special Education teacher.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting Handicapped classroom environment

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

Wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts, use of bus ramps.
