STAFF DEVELOPER – HIGHLY QUALIFIED SHELTERED
INSTRUCTION SPECIALIST (HQSI)(GRANT FUNDED)
FUNCTION
The
Staff Developer provides training related to effective instruction for Douglas County School District
teaching and administrative personnel and assists with the organization and
coordination of activities associated with the Center.
INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM
The trainer will afford
high-quality, on-going professional development in the area of HQSI (Highly
Qualified Specialized Instruction) to classroom teachers, parents,
paraprofessionals and administrators.
ORGANIZATION
RELATIONSHIP
Reports
to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, who will annually evaluate the
Staff Developer’s performance.
SUPERVISION
NEEDED
Work
is performed under the general direction of the Director of Curriculum and
Instruction. The staff developer is
expected to exercise initiative and judgment in planning and organizing
training, follow-up, and site-level support activities. Work is reviewed through a developmental
supervision plan and conferences.

ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS
Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum
and Instruction, the Staff Developer shall be primarily responsible for the
following functions:

Conducts training workshops/ sessions/ programs in the area of Highly
Qualified Sheltered Instruction to classroom teachers, parents,
paraprofessionals and administrators.

Coach content and ESL teachers in modifying and differentiating
instruction and assessment for English Language Learners.

Coach HQSI trained teachers through site-visits, co-planning,
co-teaching, and site-based HQSI follow-up support meetings and trainings.

Demonstrate and model lessons for ESL classroom and content-area
teachers using HQSI techniques.

Assist school-base and district-wide Data Based Decision-making Teams
to interpret and use assessment data to improve instruction for English
Language Learners at risk of not responding to provided interventions.

Attend district-wide Data Based Decision-making Team meetings.

Continue professional growth and strengthen professional teaching
knowledge, skills, and strategies through attending ongoing workshops,
seminars, and conferences.

Establish and maintain positive working relationships with District
staff members and fellow staff developers.

Perform
related duties as assigned.
WORK
CONTACTS
Frequent
contact with teachers, site administrators, central office, and other school
personnel. Contact with outside vendors.
CONDITIONS
OF WORK
Typical
office environment, training lab, and school sites.
REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Successful
teaching experience and the ability to offer effective instruction to adults.
Basic
knowledge associated with effective instructional techniques, curriculum
development and assessment.
ACCEPTABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Five
years progressively responsible experience in teaching English Language
Learners; a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in ESL or TESOL; experience in staff development or training of
peers or other adults; or any equivalent combination of experience and training
which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
Possession
of a valid Elementary or Secondary Teaching Certificate with ESL certification
issued by the State of Nevada; a
Master’s Degree; possession of or
ability to obtain a Nevada driver’s license.
