Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)

Primary Purpose:

Provide instructional services for identified students experiencing difficulty communicating in the educational environment.  Provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with goals from the Individual Education Plan (IEP).  Perform evaluations to determine if a speech and language disorder is present as well as conduct and/or participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee meetings for students with speech impairments.  Train district staff, consult with teachers and parents, as well as support and offer intervention services for general education students who are experiencing delays in language and articulation.

Qualifications (Experience/Education/Certification):

Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university, valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA), and Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university and valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA).

                                OR

Bachelor’s degree with valid Texas Education Agency speech therapy certificate.

                                OR

Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university and valid Texas license as a speech-language pathology intern granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA); completing the Clinical Fellowship Year for ASHA.

Major Responsibilities:

Therapy/Intervention:

§  Plans and provides appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech and language goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

§  Evaluates student progress and determines readiness for termination of therapy services.

§  Implements programs necessary to address assistive technology needs of students.

§  Implements district approved and adopted instructional interventions for general education students with communication deficits.

Assessment:

§  Conducts individual evaluations to identify students with speech and/or language disorders and to determine eligibility for services, including educational need.

§  Develops clinical management strategies or procedures and diagnostic statements by interpreting observations or data.

§  Participates in the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist in interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement and goal setting for students with multiple handicapping conditions.

§  Facilitates ARD Committee meetings for students with SI as only special education eligibility.

Consultation:

§  Counsels and involves parents in remedial process.

§  Collaborates with general education teachers, special education teachers, and/or related services staff to plan and implement classroom activities to improve communication skills of students.

§  Provides professional development in assigned schools to help school personnel identify, understand, and implement interventions for students with communication deficits.

§  Communicates effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of the student.

§  Participates in the campus problem solving support team process.

Student Management:

§  Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.

§  Establishes control and administer discipline according to the Pflugerville ISD Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Administration:

§  Compiles, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.

§  Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.

§  Complies with all district and campus routines and regulations.

§  Participates in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

§  Conserve electricity as outlined in the districts energy management plan

Special Knowledge/Skills:

§  Ability to use appropriate tests and measurements to assess communication disorders and conditions.

§  Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions.

§  Ability to instruct and manage student behavior.

§  Organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise speech-language pathology-intern and/or assistant in speech-language pathology as directed by Coordinator of Speech Services.

Working Conditions (Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Demands):

Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned. Moderate lifting and carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
