SECONDARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

9th Grade Campus, 1.0 FTE

2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION :    

  • Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate and Highly Qualified in two core subject areas, one of which must be Physical Education (MB), as defined by the Michigan Department of Education and the No Child Left Behind Act.
  • Candidate must provide documentation of how the Highly Qualified requirements have been met for each subject area.

DESIRED CERTIFICATION:    

  • Life Guard Certification, CPR for Professional Rescue and WSI Certification.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:    

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, teachers and administrator.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other professionals with a desire to improve educational practices.
  • Interest and willingness to integrate students with special needs into physical education classes.
  • A strong history of professional growth efforts (experienced teacher) or an expressed philosophy which defines the necessity for a professional teacher to grow and learn throughout a career (beginning teacher).
  • Ability to ensure the safety of all students and school property during physical education classes.
  • Member of Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPRD) or willing to become a member.
  • Member of American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) or willing to become a member.
  • Familiar with the goals and objectives for a physical education embedded in the Michigan Content Standards and Benchmarks.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and lead-up skills for individual, dual and team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Works cooperatively with classroom teachers to integrate the physical education curriculum with the regular curriculum.
  • Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
  • Works with classes for special needs children.
  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the over-all safety of pupils.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  • Plans cooperatively with the building principal to schedule classes and special events.
  • Administers physical fitness and skills testing and reports results to parents at Parent- Teacher conference time.
  • Organizes and conducts an annual field day at each elementary school.
  • Maintains professional competence through inservice education provided by the District and in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Assists in the preparation of the budget each year for the physical education area.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Cooperates with school administration in providing specialty-performing groups for special occasions, parent meetings, assemblies, and inter-scholastic athletic events.           
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
