TITLE:
Library Media Specialist - Building Level
ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports
to Building Principal
JOB SUMMARY: The
role of the School Library Media Specialist is to teach
students how to find, evaluate and use information effectively
as well as to promote an appreciation of literature by ensuring
that students and teachers are effective users of ideas and
information.
DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teacher
1.
Teach students to use critical thinking and
problem solving skills for information literacy using the
Kansas Curricular Standards for Library Media and national
standards as set forth by the American Library
Association.
2.
Instruct students, staff and the community to
analyze learning and information needs, to locate and use
resources that will meet those needs, and to evaluate,
understand and communicate the information those resources
provide.
3.
Be knowledgeable about current research on
teaching and learning; skilled in applying findings to a
variety of situations - particularly those that call upon
students to access, evaluate, and use information from multiple
sources in order to learn, to think, to create and to apply
knowledge.
Instructional
Partner
1.
Collaborate with Teachers and others to support
curriculum content, learning outcomes, student information
needs, and information resources.
2.
Help Teachers and others to meet state and
district instructional standards in the Library Media
Program.
3.
Work with the entire school community to provide
leadership in developing policies, practices, and curricula
that guide students to develop information literacy
skills.
Information
Specialist
1.
Teach strategies for locating, accessing and
evaluating information by integrating both electronic and
printed resources.
2.
Acquire and evaluate information resources in a
variety of formats.
3.
Bring an awareness of information issues to
Teachers, Administrators, students and others.
4.
Model and articulate ethical uses of
information.
Program
Administrator
1.
Be an advocate for the Library Media Program and
provide the knowledge, vision and leadership to oversee the
program.
2.
Select, organize and maintain a current
collection appropriate for the curriculum standards and the
school community in accordance with the district selection
policy.
3.
Collaborate with staff to schedule instructional
use of the Library Media Center and its resources.
4.
Work with Administration to plan, manage, and
implement Library Media Center budgets.
5.
Work as a member of the building staff to
facilitate communication and sharing of ideas and
resources.
6.
Supervise daily operation of the Library Media
Center and its resources.
7.
Advocate and team with others on literacy
programs at the building level.
8.
Partner with the district Library Media Team to
facilitate communication and share ideas and resources.
9.
Supervise Library Media personnel, student
assistants and volunteers.
10.
Prepare and share inventories and
reports.
SKILLS AND EDUCATIONAL
REQUIREMENTS: Kansas Teaching Certificate with Kansas
Library Media Endorsement required. Classroom teaching
experience recommended.
INTERRELATIONS:
Contact with building staff and district personnel.
Ability to work with a team. Ability to work with a
diverse population.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Able to lift up to 25 pounds. May required standing for
long periods of time. Attendance at required meetings and
inservice training. In district travel is
required.
NEEDED ATTRIBUTES:
Ability to organize, coordinate and communicate
effectively. Computer expertise in library, application
software and Internet use.
TEMPERAMENT:
Ability to perform a variety of tasks, ability to be flexible
when asked to perform numerous tasks simultaneously, perform
under deadlines and work in a calm, sensible and efficient
manner. Attendance is important.
