SUPERVISOR FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills to provide sound educational programs for students who qualify for special education services.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate on an ongoing basis the Special Education curriculum, procedures and individual student needs and achievements.
  • Supervise and coordinate special education classroom programs.
  • Compile and maintain all reports, records, etc., that are legally required and useful.
  • Interpret the objectives and programs of the Special Education services to the Board, staff and the public.
  • Implement procedures for referral evaluation, placement, assignment and re-appraisal of students with regards to the Special Education services program.
  • Consult with parents of students enrolled in the program.
  • Provide appropriate programs to supplement regular classroom instruction.
  • Arrange Special Education transportation as appropriate.
  • Implement procedures for purchasing special education equipment and supplies.
  • Supervise preparation of attendance reports and similar data necessary for reimbursement of funds, collecting of tuition for out-of-district students and similar fiscal matters.
  • Develop budget recommendations, provide expenditure control on budgets for Special Education, maintain and control the various local funds generated by student activities.
  • Knowledge of all legal requirements governing Special Education.
  • Assist with the in-service and training of teachers.
  • Assist in the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs.
  • Attend special events held to recognize student achievement and school sponsored activities.
  • Schedule staff assignments.
  • Complete staff evaluations.
  • Supervise and coordinate home instruction for special students.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary.
  • Cooperate with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
  • Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain a professional personal appearance.
  • Adhere to district health and safety procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Adhere to Board policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters Degree or higher or equivalent.
  • Full approval in at least one area of special education.
  • Three years of successful experience in special education.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must possess a license, certification or registration from a governmental agency or legally recognized professional board or association in at least one area of special education or be recommended by a college or university offering an appropriate training program (R340.1792).
  • Must meet the requirements for a full or temporary approval as established under R340.1772 of the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (see below).
  • Must fully comply with the Administrator Certification requirements in MCL380.1246.

  • With your letter of interest you must provide photographic evidence of meeting the minimal qualifications, i.e., copies of diplomas, educational transcripts, certifications and licensure.
  • Current letters of reference (at least one letter of reference must be submitted).

  • Internal applicants are equally responsible for providing all requested information. Calhoun Intermediate School District will not retrieve or copy information from your personnel file. R 340.1772   Supervisor of special education; education and experience

requirements.

   Rule 72. 

(1) For full approval, a supervisor of special education shall

possess all of the following minimum qualifications:

   (a)  A master's degree or higher.

   (b)  Full approval in at least 1 area of special education.

   (c)  Three years of successful experience in special education.

   (d)  Twelve semester or equivalent hours of graduate credit in a college

or university whose program has been approved by the state board of education.

Graduate credit shall be distributed appropriately to assure knowledge and

competency as related to special education in all of the following areas:

   (i)  Curriculum and instruction.

   (ii)  Administrative procedures.

   (iii)  Personnel supervision and evaluation.

   (iv)  Communication skills.

   (v)  Leadership of professional development.

   (vi)  Facilitation of effective instruction.

   (vii)  Data-based program improvement.

   (viii)  School law and policy.

   (ix)  Parental and family collaboration.

   (e)   Verification from a college or university approved for the

preparation of special education supervisors.

   (2)  A supervisor of special education who has full approval status shall

maintain full approval status indefinitely.

   (3)  For temporary approval, a supervisor of special education shall

possess all of the following minimum qualifications:

   (a)  A master's degree or higher.

   (b)  Full approval in at least 1 area of special education.

   (c)  Three years of successful experience in special education.

   (d)  Verification of enrollment in the supervisor of special education

program from a college or university approved by the state board of education

for preparation of special education supervisors.

   (4)  Continuation of temporary approval is dependent upon the satisfactory

completion of not less than 6 semester or equivalent hours of required credit

toward full approval before the beginning of the next school year.

   (5)  Any person who has completed all program requirements in effect

before the effective date of these rules shall be eligible for full  approval

as a supervisor of special education.
