Job Announcement

Director of Response to Intervention (RtI)

E.L. Haynes Public Charter School, currently the highest-performing PK-8th grade public school in Washington, D.C. and a national model for outstanding student achievement, effective practices, and innovative programs, seeks a seasonal educator and leader to serve as Director of Response to Intervention (RtI).

The Response to Intervention model is a systematic way to problem-solve and monitor progress of all students in reaching standards through culturally responsive teaching practices, evidence-based core curricula, and effective interventions.  The Director reports to the Chief Academic Officer and is responsible for implementing and overseeing supports for students including core and intervention curricula, high quality instruction, and analysis and interpretation of data.

The Director of RtI will join a first-rate team at a school that is nationally recognized for excellence.  First and foremost, E.L. Haynes is a Center of Excellence driven by its mission: every student of every race, socioeconomic status, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice.  The school currently serves over 800 students in grades Pre-K through Grade 9, and will continue to grow until it serves more than 1,100 students through 12th grade.  At scale, it will provide a rigorous, college-preparatory education, typically reserved for an elite few, to students from diverse backgrounds in our nation’s capital.

The results are clear and dramatic: E.L. Haynes students significantly outperform the citywide average of student scoring proficient or advanced on the DC-CAS exam.  Last year, 90% of E.L. Haynes 8th-graders scored proficient or advanced in math, and 75% scored proficient or advanced in reading.  Over the last six years, E.L. Haynes was presented with CityBridge Foundation’s first-ever Strong Schools Award in recognition of strong student achievement and contributions to education in D.C.  In 2008, 2009, and 2010, E.L. Haynes was awarded Silver-Gain status in New Leaders for New Schools’ Effective Practice Incentive Community (EPIC) grant program.

The Director of RtI will have a unique opportunity to drive the excellence of E.L. Haynes’ educational program across all grade levels.  As a member of the Leadership Team, s/he will help lead the school’s core strategy implementation for achieving outstanding results for all students.  S/he will be part of a dynamic, collaborative organization that has developed a culture of excellence and entrepreneurship.  In addition, s/he will impact education beyond the school’s walls.  E.L. Haynes is engaged in systemic reform efforts that shape policy, develop human capital, convene practitioners, and launch innovation, including projects with schools and teachers in Washington, D.C. and across the nation that have been funded by Race to the Top, foundations, and investors.  Each of these systemic reform initiatives is an outgrowth of successful practices in the Pre-K through high school education program.
