Job Title: School Social Worker 

 

QUALlFCATIONS:

  • Masters Degree in Social Work from an accredited school of Social Work.
  • Type 73 certificate in School Social Work issued by the Ilinois State Board of Education.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Special

Education and Building Administrator

 

ROLE OF SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER: The basic focus of the school social worker is the link between

the school, the home, and the community. The social worker

must be able to relate to and work with all aspects of the student's

environment. The school social worker brings to the school setting

a systems approach to assessing needs and organizing appropriate

services for students and their families. This perspective provides

a comprehensive view for assessing a student within the context of

the family, the school, and the community. Building on this

assessment, the social worker develops a plan to assist teachers,

students, and parents to work together to support the student in

the successful completion of his/her education.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Performance priorities of school social workers include:

. The physical and emotional safety of students and staff.

. Consultation with educational staff to encourage an

understanding of diversity and how it impacts students' ability

to function in the school setting.

. Participation in building problem solving meetings.

early identification of high-risk students

early intervention with students displaying

inappropriate behaviors

assisting in building a support system around students

struggling with emotional/behavioral problems

. Assists in the completion of functional assessments and the

development of behavior intervention plans.

. Conducts formal and informal student observations.

. Provides consultation in the selection and implementation of

programs relating to building climate and/or physical/emotional

safety (i.e. violence prevention, anger management, antibullying,

suicide prevention and conflict resolution.)

. Collaborates with community agencies on behalf of students

and their families.

. Provides referral information regarding community agencies

and private therapists to students and their families.

. Participates on Building Response Teams to address crisis

situations within the schools.

· Provides individual and group counseling.

. Participates in IEP meetings to determine eligibilty, appropriate

planning and re-evaluation for students who require special

education services and programs.

. Provides written social developmental studies and adaptive

behavior assessments when needed.

· Provides parent and teacher consultation when needed.

· Participates in staff development and in-service presentations.

. Reports-or assists other staff in the reporting of suspected

child abuse or neglect to the Illinois Department of Children and

Family Services.

· Supervision of school social work interns.
