TITLE:                                    Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction

 

QUALIFICATIONS:             

  1. Iowa State Department of Education license as a district level administrator (Superintendent).
  2. Doctorate in Education, Education Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction ( or willingness to obtain.)
  3. Three years of successful experience in administration.
  4. Proven record of experience in improving curriculum, teaching, and learning within a PLC environment.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL:                      The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction provides vision, leadership and management to maximize student learning within the district.   The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for overseeing and coordinating school improvement.   The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction directs the planning, implementation and evaluation of those programs in the areas of elementary, early childhood education, secondary, special education, and staff development; assists the Superintendent in the evaluation of those District personnel as assigned.

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.             Supervises a variety of programs and processes in the areas of school administration, school improvement, special education, student activities, curriculum and instruction, staff development, assessment, and related areas necessary to the mission of Education Services.

 

2.             Coordinates personnel, practices, and programs within Education Services to maximize positive organizational impact and further the District's strategic plan.

 

3.             Facilitates meetings for the purpose of clarifying communication, developing positive interpersonal relationships, and developing strategic initiatives for successful implementation at the building level.

 

4.             Assists Superintendent and Board of Education for the purpose of providing support with ongoing Board and student achievement goals.

 

5.             Collaborates with other (e.g. district personnel, building administrators, other district personnel, community organizations, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and/or programs.

 

6.             Communicates information to teachers, staff, and school board regarding district curriculum, instruction, assessment and objectives.

 

 

 

 

 

 

7.             Compiles data from a variety sources for the purpose of evaluating assigned programs and/or complying with financial, legal and administrative requirement.

 

8.             Composes a wide variety of materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, policies, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.

 

9.             Develops proposals, new programs, budgets and grant opportunities for the purpose of ensuring that district, state and federal objectives are achieved.

 

10.         Facilitates communication between personnel, students, parents and/or the public for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts.

 

11.         Monitors fund balances of assigned programs and related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, related revenues are generated, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.

 

12.         Participates in professional development for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.

 

13.         Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget.

 

14.         Supervises overall curriculum, instruction, assessment and assigned school and district administrators for the purpose of ensuring that district and state educational objectives are achieved.

 

15.         Represents the district as Chair of the Multi-cultural gender fair committee, that works in coordination with the Equity Coordinator to ensure equity is represented in the curriculum.  

 

16.         Represent the district as directed by the board or by the superintendent when the superintendent is absent.

 

17.         Completes required local, state and federal reports as assigned.

 

18.         Keeps informed of and interprets all court decisions, regulations, statutes, rules and policies affecting his/her division.

 

19.         Attends board meetings and prepares such reports for the Board as the Superintendent may request.

 

20.         Keeps abreast of developments in the assigned program areas and provides leadership in determining appropriateness for inclusion in the District's education program.

 

21.         Works with appropriate staff as it relates to evaluation design and the resulting interpretation of data as it applies to decision-making and program change.

 

22.         Assures the communication of program information to the professional staff and coordinates the dissemination of program materials.

 

 

23.         Maintains liaison and active participation with educational leaders at the state, regional and national levels.

 

24.         Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:        Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pushing-pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:               1.   Includes extremes of temperature and humidity.

                                                            2.   Hazards include stairs and communicable diseases.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:            Twelve month year.   Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

 

EVALUATION:                                  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of Board Policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
