Overview of E.L. Haynes

 

E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. seeks a Technology Innovation Coordinator to join a first-rate team at a school that is nationally recognized as a Center for Excellence. First and foremost, E.L. Haynes is driven by its mission: every student of every race, socioeconomic status, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice. Today, E.L. Haynes students significantly outperform the citywide average of students scoring proficient or advanced on the DC-CAS exam, and was the top-performing PK-8<sup>th</sup> grade public school in Washington D.C. Last year, 90% of E.L. Haynes 8th-graders scored proficient or advanced in math, and 75% scored proficient or advanced in reading (compared to the citywide average of 44% and 43%, respectively).  The school currently serves 800 students from Pre-K through Grade 9, and will continue to grow to serve more than 1,100 students through Grade 12. At scale, it will provide a rigorous, college-preparatory education, typically reserved for an elite few, to students from diverse backgrounds in our nation’s capital. 

 

As a member of the Leadership Team, the Technology Innovation Coordinator will have a unique opportunity to help lead the school’s core strategy implementation for achieving outstanding results for all students.  S/he will be part of a dynamic, collaborative organization that has developed a culture of excellence and entrepreneurship. In addition, s/he will impact education beyond the school’s walls as part of E.L. Haynes Broader Impact efforts. These systemic reform efforts include shaping policy, developing human capital, convening practitioners, and launching innovation both locally and nationally.

 

Overview of the Role

 

The Technology Innovation Coordinator will develop and implement E.L. Haynes’ vision for blended learning and innovation in instructional technology over a multi-year period.  To date, E.L. Haynes has invested significantly in instructional technology, including Promethean Boards and computers in every classroom, access to online content, and a one-to-one laptop ratio in the high school.  In addition, teachers at E.L. Haynes have already begun to incorporate technology into their instruction in various ways, such as assigning readymade and teacher-made instructional videos, using online forms and social media to engage students, and teaching students to use technology to access their performance data and create portfolios of work.  Over the next 2-3 years, E.L. Haynes aspires to become a proof point in the blended learning movement, by developing a systematic approach to using technology to support instruction, using pilots to learn from and improve its approach, and sharing its learnings with the educational community in Washington, D.C. and more broadly.

 

This role will report into the Chief Academic Officer’s organization and will work closely with the principals of each campus, directors of academics and technology, and teachers to develop and implement the blended learning vision.  

 

The following is a general list of responsibilities of the position; additional duties may be assigned.


Design and Strategy

·         Collaborate with Principals and Directors of Response to Intervention, Technology, Literacy and Numeracy to develop goals and a multi-year roadmap for rollout of blended learning

·         Manage all initiatives related to blended learning

·         Provide research-based recommendations on blended learning models, instructional software, and online subscription content to increase student achievement; this may include technology specifically for use by teachers and parents

·         Develop and design a process for conducting a thoughtful series of pilots of new blended learning models, software, online subscription tools; this should include a process to internal development of pilot concepts

·         Make recommendations on the staff, funding and technological resources required to support blended learning efforts

·         Keep abreast of developments in educational technology and cultivate a network of blended learning experts and contacts at other high-performing schools to ensure that E.L. Haynes is connected to the most innovative thinking around blended learning

·         Work with the VP of Marketing and Development and the Chief of Policy and Operations to ensure implementation of existing grant funding and to secure additional sources of funding for E.L. Haynes’ blended learning program


Implementation and Support

·         Coordinate and/or deliver professional development for teachers on using blended learning to improve student achievement; this includes both general training and training specific to technologies or models being used in pilots

·         Provide planning and implementation support to teachers leading blended learning pilots, including coordinating support from the Director of Technology on technology needs, and support from the Directors of Literacy, Numeracy, and RtI on instructional needs

·         Meet regularly with teachers and principals involved in pilots to evaluate pilot progress and tailor implementation accordingly

·         Work with the Director of Student Performance to support teachers’ use of student data generated by online subscriptions and other blended learning resources

·         Work with the Parent Coordinator to expand students and families’ access to online resources outside of the school day


Evaluation and Dissemination

·         Develop and track specific measurable goals to gauge the success of the blended learning program overall, especially in improving student achievement

·         Develop and implement a rapid evaluation tool to track and analyze the success of individual pilots

·         Track and determine strategies to improve student engagement with technology, including  data portal, online subscriptions, and instructional other online resources

·         Analyze the impact of technology-based strategies on the use and allocation of resources, including, but not limited to staffing structure and student-to-teacher ratio.

·         Provide the Leadership Team with recommendations on how to improve the blended learning program based on evaluation findings

·         Design and implement a dissemination plan for sharing blended learning best practices within E.L. Haynes, District of Columbia public and charter schools, and more broadly.

 

Qualifications

·         A strong belief that all children, from every background, deserve an excellent, college-preparatory education, and are able to succeed

·         Minimum of 3 years relevant experience; leadership and/or classroom experience preferred

·         Knowledge of 21st century skills and national technology literacy standards.

·         Solid technical skills and experience with Microsoft Office, Google documents, and a range of software and online educational tools

·         Exceptional analytical and writing skills

·         Demonstrated ability to coach, lead, and collaborate with adults from a diverse range of

perspectives and backgrounds

·         Self-motivated, especially when juggling competing priorities

·         Ability to see multiple projects with many moving parts through from beginning to end

·         Ability to think strategically, translate thoughts to action, and follow through with all details

·         Humility, a sense of humor, and flexibility in an entrepreneurial environment

·         Bachelor’s degree required
