The individual selected for this position will lead the effort to launch a single sex school for young men, envisioned as a grade 6-12 program, that will be designed to address the particular academic, social-emotional and behavioral needs of boys and young men.
 
This position requires knowledge of teaching and learning processes including knowledge of organizational and management theories and practices. The incumbent must have knowledge and commitment to decentralized decision-making and be accountable for results that facilitate creative processes toward achievement of district expectations. Incumbent must have knowledge of school finance, budget development and implementation, and support services delivery systems. The ability to work and communicate effectively with people to focus resources (both human and financial) toward the achievement of district expected results will be instrumental in this position along with the ability to facilitate group processes in consensus building, conflict resolution, planning and decision-making. The incumbent must understand that quality teaching and learning are the essential processes and product of public schools and have the ability to focus human and financial resources toward this end.
 
 
JOB PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY
 
This position is responsible for leading a planning and implementation process in the 2012-13 school year for the development of a School for Young Men. The process will include but is not limited to: developing curriculum and special programs; hiring staff; developing a comprehensive plan for staff development; managing the student recruitment and application process; developing the school calendar and master schedule; and planning for transportation, food service and facilities improvements.
 
If the School for Young Men is approved by the AISD Board of Trustees, the goal is to have the school open for the 2013-14 school year. Should the school open, this position will be responsible for Middle School and High School students’ grades 6-12 within the School for Young Men.  Incumbent will be responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating teachers and staff, developing and implementing educational programs in the school, overseeing extracurricular activities and assuring that Board policies are followed, as well as directing all support services of the school. Incumbent will be responsible for the administration of the school programs and services, as well as supervision of teachers, counselors, and other administrative staff at the school.  Incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Boards results policies while working within the boundaries of the executive limitations.  
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
 
§  Supportive of single-sex, college preparatory public education.
 
§  Provide leadership to young men in urban schools.
 
§  Ensure the acquisition of academic skills needed to achieve success in college with special emphasis on math, science and technology.
 
§  Provide leadership in creating an environment where responsible leadership can be taught and applied.
 
§  Supervise a total educational program including wellness life skills.
 
§  Provide leadership to support young men meeting the qualifications for college scholarships/financial aid.
 
§  Manage all operations and functions of his/her school consistent with district policy and district priorities.
 
§  Direct, oversee and evaluate staff for effectiveness in terms of their performance responsibilities and productivity in achieving the district’s priorities and results.
 
§  Work with teachers and staff in his/her school to identify expertise and support services necessary for assistance in meeting their identified needs.
 
§  Plan, organize, staff, implement and evaluate school programs and functions necessary to support effective teaching and quality learning utilizing district expertise and assistance when the need is identified and requested.
 
§  Visible in his/her school community and recognized as the educational leader responsible for effective teaching, student learning and a safe, healthy environment.
 
§  Serve as a member of the Associate Superintendents’ team and participate in planning, development and evaluation.
 
§  Keep the Associate Superintendent informed of current school critical issues and incidents about which he/she should be aware.
 
§  Interact with the supporting Foundation to develop a positive relationship.  Interact with an advisory board of prominent citizens.
 
§  Seek to have every student accepted to a four-year college or university.
 
QUALIFICATIONS   
 
Master’s degree

Five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience

Administrative certification

Three (3) years of successful administrative experience

Incumbent must have demonstrated success working with and through people, in establishing goals, objectives and action plans to produce expected ends/results.

COMPENSATION
 
Salary Grade A9B, 230 Days - $90,000 - $100,000
(The salary is based on experience and qualifications.)
