Helena School District # 1 is accepting applications for General Education Para Educator openings.  These positions will begin August 27, 2012.  Qualifications include: high school diploma or equivalent; at least 3 months experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by the District.  Prior successful experience assisting students with special educational needs is preferred. 

 

Entry level pay range is $9.31 to $11.78 per hour depending upon education level and relevant experience.  A comprehensive benefit package is provided including coverage during the summer break.

Position Description

 

Job Title:          Para Educator

Department:   Educational Services

Reports To:      Building Administrator

Prepared Date: December 2011

 

SUMMARY: Assist instructional personnel in general daily classroom activities.  Supervise students at recess, lunch and outside play.  Responsible to represent the school building and district in a most positive way to students, staff, parents, and the school community.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

Supervises students before and after school, during lunch period and during recess.

Assists in small group pupil instruction and provides limited instructional assistance to individual students at teachers’ request.

Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and other functions.

Assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for specialized instructional units.

Assists teacher with attendance and related clerical functions.

Assists in assembling/hanging materials on bulletin boards and keeping displays current.

Operates standard school equipment such as laminator, copier, audiovisual, etc.

Assist with loading and unloading of students on the buses.

May escort children to and from various rooms.

Other duties as assigned.

 

                        Other essential duties and responsibilities depending upon       assignment:

                        Check books in and out on the computer.

                        Shelve library materials and assist with inventory.

                        Run circulation reports including overdue notices

                        Processes student attendance.

                        Prepares mailings.

                        Distributes building mail and community/district flyers

                        Greets visitors.

                        Files records/memos.

                        Makes and receives telephone calls, takes messages, routes calls.

                        Provides appropriate first aid.

                        Administers medications according to policy and regulations.

                        Other duties as assigned

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May supervise students when the teacher and/or librarian are not present.

 

QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three-months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by the District. 

  LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, parents, guardians, and/or staff.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Ability to meet multiple demands from several people.  Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, guardians and/or the school community.  Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and writing.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Trustees policies.
