Certified School Social Worker /School Counselor Job Description

Qualifications: Social Work Master’s Degree from a credited school, Current Type 73 with a focus of School Social Work.

Hours: 7:40am-4:00pm

Goal: As a part of the school support team, the School Social Worker will work collaboratively with the rest of the student support team as well as the administrative staff to assist in the operational functions of the school. The School Social Worker will help provide a safe, comfortable and positive learning environment for all students to be able to reach their goals. The School Social Worker will also be able to collaborate and plan with the special education teachers, case manager and the general education teachers through consultative services as well as through accommodations and modifications.

Reports to: School Director/Coordinator of Student Services

Major Job Responsibilities:

-          Provides individual and group counseling to enhance student success for general education and special education students.

-          Develops and implements behavior intervention plans formal and informal

-          Use the best available evidence (database, scholarly articles and book, and school-based data) understand the role of research in selecting and designing interventions

o   Continues research on up to date evidence biased behavioral interventions

-          Share and collaborate with other school personal when interventions are effective

-          Attend mandated CPS trainings in order to stay with compliance laws

-          Formulate practical strategies to measure impact of practice interventions on student outcomes based on prior-identified goals.

-          Identify crisis intervention techniques for students and other school clients in acute distress

o   De-escalation techniques, rapid assessment strategies

o   Serve the role of the Gatekeeper and assess students who may have suicidal ideation

§  Serve as the liaison between Chicago Public Schools crisis unit, SASS, and the parents

-          Fulfill role of the mandated reporter and investigate and report all incidents of child abuse and neglect to Department of Family and Child Services

-          Serve as a liaison between homes, schools, hospitals, social welfare agencies, therapists, alternative schools, and others as needed

-          Provide an up-to-date list of community resources and support for parents

-          Expand knowledge in areas related to the job role as Social Worker (including technology applications) by such means as reading current literature on students with special education needs, attending professional conferences and workshops, and collaborate with other professionals doing similar work.

-          Maintains appropriate progress notes for special education students

-          Keep documentation of services for intervention relating to students in RTI and general educations students

-           Document all crisis interventions including all DCFS reports and SASS reports

-          Participates in 504 meetings

o   Interviews and consults with teachers in regards to the progress for students with 504’s

-          Prepares for all Individual Education Plans

o   Attends all annual IEP meetings

§  Interview teachers in regards to student functioning

§  Completes developmental functioning section on the IEP

§  Determines need for accommodations and modifications

§  Writes attainable, measurable, and observable IEP goals that meet Illinois State Standards

§  Update Functional Behavior Assessment as well as the Behavior Intervention Plan

o   Attends all three year re-evaluation

§  Interview teachers in regards to student functioning

§  Interview parents for student’s adaptive behavior, current family functioning and environmental factors that may contribute to the student’s school functioning

§    Interview student to gather information regarding their perception of school, family, friends, and adaptive behavior

§  Observe student in the classroom setting

§  Present social, emotional, and behavioral findings.

§  Writes eligibility determination

o   Attends all initial IEPs

§  Attends all Domain meetings and presents how the social emotional evaluation will take place

§  Interview teachers in regards to student functioning

§  Interview parents for student’s developmental history, adaptive behavior, current family functioning, and environmental factors that may contribute to the student’s school functioning, as well as the parent’s perception of the problem

§   Interview student to gather information regarding their perception of school, family, friends, and adaptive behavior

§  Observe student in the classroom setting

§  Present social, emotional, and behavioral findings.

§  Writes eligibility determination

-          Attends and participates in all RTI meetings

-          Communicates with the teachers, case manager, nurses, and other school personnel, parents/guardians and ALL CPS clinicians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the social and emotional needs of our students.

-          Participate in parent and grade level meetings

-          Maintain Confidentiality for all social emotional related issues.

-          Keep inventory of RTI supplies

-          Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

-          Research and contact high schools to help plan the Distinctive Schools 8<sup>th</sup> grade High School Fair

-          Attends school events and activities as needed

-          Participates as an active part of the school community representing social emotional behaviors

-          Participate in school activities and committees.

-          Use empathy to advocate for each students’ needs

o   Advocate for students who are being harmed by the educational system, criminal justice system, or who are homeless by mobilizing school and community resources to advocate on their behalf.

-          Supports teachers with classroom behavioral management techniques

-          Obverse general education and special education students in the classroom to assist the teacher with behavioral or emotional interventions

-          Serve as the liaison for Students of Transitional Living Services

o   Attend an introductory meeting

o   Distribute all information packets to families who as to qualify

o   Work with the STLS Coordinators to provide CTA bus cards to parents and students

o   Work with the STLS Coordinators to provide hardship transportation services
