QUALIFICATIONS:

1.                                    Valid Illinois Teaching Certificate with endorsement in English

2.                                    Minimum of four years teaching experience in the content area.

3.                                    MA required; Type 75 Administrative Certificate required.

 

REPORTS TO:      Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruction

1.                Keep informed about educational innovations and trends and provide departmental leadership in the selection, development, and utilization of instructional materials, equipment, and methodologies.

2.                In conjunction with the building administration and the Lead Teachers, articulate the departmental program among and between grade levels and courses and elementary schools.

3.                Assist department committees and forward department recommendations for textbook adoptions and other materials of instruction.

4.                Provide instructional leadership to members of the department and act as a departmental resource person.

5.                Perform other responsibilities as related to curriculum and instruction.

 

Curriculum

1.                Prepare departmental information for inclusion in the annual Curriculum Guide.

2.                Advise the Assistant Superintendent of course prerequisites and other concerns.

3.                Assist the Director of Night School and the Summer School in course selection for night school and summer school courses.

4.                Meet with the Assistant Superintendent on a scheduled basis to review curriculum revision and development.

5.                Be responsible for coordinating committees to assist in establishing, disseminating, and evaluating department curricula in accordance with the district curriculum plan.

6.                Provide curriculum and instructional leadership to members of the department and in conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, provide curriculum guidance to building administration.

7.                Advise the Principal or his/her designee on student placement.

8.        Perform other responsibilities as related to curriculum.

 

Operations

1.                Conduct a minimum of one departmental meeting per month and submit minutes to building and district administration as required.

2.                Be responsible for submitting departmental communications, bulletins, etc., to the Principals, Assistant Principals and Assistant Superintendent.

3.                Work with the building administrators and Assistant Superintendent to develop the department master schedule.

4.                Assist in the preparation and administration of the approved departmental budget as well as review and recommend all requests for materials (requisitions) for departmental personnel.

5.                Assist in overseeing the physical facilities and instructional materials within the department.   Check supplies received by the department and other school organizations such as Library/AV, pupil services staff, etc., for the benefit of the department.

 

Staff Development

1.                Inform members in the department about the latest developments within the teaching field.

2.                Assist in the development of in-service training programs for and with departmental members within the framework of the district and school in-service program.

3.                Identify possible professional conferences, provide information for staff members, and encourage staff members to attend.

4.                Provide members of the department with information about professional organizations.

5.                Performs other responsibilities as related to staff development.

 

Leadership

1.                Meet with the Principal or Principal's designee to discuss departmental plans and progress pertaining to curriculum or staff development.

2.                Submit a summary at the end of the school year of:

a)      Department achievements

b)      Future innovations planned

c)      Goals for the coming year

3.                Attend relevant elementary and high school, district, and professional meetings, as necessary; serve as a facilitator to help address articulation needs.

4.                Serve as a member of appropriate district or building committees and assist in the establishment of district, building, and departmental objectives and the development of a plan for the implementation and evaluation of these objectives.

5.                Perform other responsibilities as related to leadership.

 

  Personnel

1.                Provide support for non-tenured teachers in conjunction with the immediate supervisor.

2.                Participate in the in-house screening and interviews of candidates for departmental positions.

3.                Conduct evaluations of certified staff.

4.                Perform other responsibilities as related to personnel.

   

SALARY:                     Compensation based on experience

 

EVALUATION :            Performance evaluated annually by the Assistant Superintendent.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve Months
