The Afterschool
College & Career
Readiness
Advisor will facilitate and implement a college and career
readiness afterschool program for high school youth, one day a
week for two hours each session.
In addition, specific skill-based series workshops are offered
throughout the session.
The afterschool program uses both established curriculum and
expertise developed by the Advisor intended to prepare youth
for their future after high school.
Key Duties/Tasks
·
Market to, recruit, and engage at
least 8-25 youth in an afterschool program at their home
school
·
Facilitate weekly programming
sessions during afterschool hours
·
Deliver afterschool programming
using established curriculum (1x per week)
·
Identify and assist in organizing
meaningful skill-based workshops with youth, potentially
including essay writing, ACT prep, scholarship detectives,
financial literacy, career exploration, resume writing,
etc.
·
Partner and collaborate with school
personnel and community organizations to host specific
skill-based series workshops
·
Develop quality relationships with
youth while helping them to develop lifelong skills
·
Develop family and/or key community
relationships with the intent of increasing support for youth
involvement in programs
·
Hold high expectations and provide
support for youth to obtain academic success
·
Participate in four day-long
Saturday retreats that will occur throughout the 30 week
session
·
Participate in all required
trainings and team meetings
Desired Qualifications
Education and Training
·
AA degree (or equivalent experience)
in community or youth development, education, social justice or
related field.
Experience
·
Experience working collaboratively
with youth
·
Experience guiding youth through the
college and career readiness process
·
Successful experience working in
multicultural and anti-bias youth programming
·
Successful experience working with
diverse populations
·
Experience facilitating
inter-cultural dialogue
Knowledge and Skills
·
Self motivated, capable of
effectively working independently with limited supervision
·
Knowledge of the various choices
youth have after graduation from high school
·
Ability to communicate positively
and effectively with youth and families from various
cultures
·
Demonstrated commitment to social
justice in a professional context
·
Strong team orientation and
demonstrated interpersonal skills
Compensation
·
Stipend paid position of $1,700 for
60 direct contact hours per 30 weeks
·
Hours:
2 hrs/wk direct contact plus preparation time
·
Paid at hourly rate of $20 per hour
for trainings, retreats and pre-approved college visits/special
events/workshops
·
Trainings (up to 30 hours): August
20, 21, 23 and October 18, 2012

school districts in the eastern Twin Cities metro area.

The school districts have united
to provide culturally responsive learning opportunities that
enable all young people to engage fully in the social,
economic, and democratic lives of their communities.
The EMID Office of Equity and Integration provides on-going
afterschool programs throughout the collaborative districts
hosted within secondary schools.
All of the programming purposefully embeds four key components:
intra/inter-cultural competency, high academic achievement,
civic engagement and leadership.
