Title:

Director of Fine & Performing Arts


Definition:
Coordinate the development and maintenance of a quality, district-wide fine and performing arts program. This includes identifying the philosophy, vision, and objectives of the program; developing/implementing a long-range plan for the Arts based on the identified philosophy, vision and objectives; designing/aligning curriculum to meet NYS learning standards for the Arts; supervising and evaluating teachers who instruct in this curriculum; preparing and managing the annual department budget that supports this curriculum; and promoting the arts program in the community. Addressing Board priorities in the program is a primary objective.


Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives general supervision from the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

Supervises school-level chairpersons in music and art, in collaboration with building principals.

Supervises and directs teachers of art, music, drama, dance throughout the district, in collaboration with building principals.

Supervises and evaluates the performance of clerical staff in the fine arts department.


Minimum Qualifications:

NYS School District Administrator (SDA) Certification.

Masters Degree or equivalent in Art or Music education.

Valid NYS teaching certificate.

5 years successful teaching experience in the fine arts.

Administrative/leadership responsibility in an area of fine arts, preferred.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board of Education.


Desired Experience or Training:

Ability to develop and manage programs and budgets.

Knowledge of overall operations of music, art, theater.

Strong leadership, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.

Grant writing experience.

Ability to manage and support personnel.

Ability to interpret policy, procedures and data.

Perform duties in a professional, ethical and responsible manner.


Major Responsibilities/Duties:


ADMINISTRATIVE:

  1. Interpret district policies and administrative regulations to principals and teachers .

  2. Meet with other faculty members and administrators to plan interdisciplinary cooperation.

  3. Arrange with principals and staff developers to conduct in-service training.

  4. Orient new teachers in assigned curriculum areas.

  5. Assist in obtaining grants and volunteer services.

  6. Lead interview committee in hiring professional staff within the departmental area.

  7. Meet all legal or mandated requirements for evaluation, supervision, assignment of staff and budgetary responsibilities.

  8. Plan, organize, and preside over district-wide meetings.

  9. Arrange annual instrument rental night and maintain contact with company representatives.

  10. Compile, maintain, file, and present all reports, records, and other documents, as required.

  11. Maintain current inventory of district instruments and equipment.

  12. Manages and maintain an electronic district Arts calendar.

  13. Identify and advocate for adequate/appropriate space for performance venues, exhibits and teaching.

  14. Document, identify and collect data to assess K-12 programs and student progress.

  15. Promote collaboration and collaborative decision making among staff.

  16. Maintain membership and active involvement in professional organizations.

  17. Perform other tasks/responsibilities related to the position.


SUPERVISION:

  1. Assess teacher performance; seeks subject-specific, technical assistance, as needed.

  2. Assist principals in the supervision and evaluation of teachers within department.

  3. Supervise and evaluate clerical staff in department.

  4. Supervise stipend positions in area of responsibility in conjunction with building principal.

  5. Perform other tasks/responsibilities related to the position.


INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP:

  1. Direct the development, evaluation, revision and alignment of fine arts curriculum, K-12, in the areas of instrumental music; vocal music; visual art; drama/theatre; dance.

  2. Coordinate development of district-wide goals and instructional objectives in conjunction with department chairs.

  3. Coordinate with curriculum committee, a system-wide curriculum review.

  4. Serve as a resource on curriculum matters to teachers, community and parents.

  5. Stay current with new technology and research in the fine arts fields and makes appropriate recommendations to the Assistant Superintendent.

  6. Support/attend school arts events.

  7. Attend conferences and promotes appropriate conference attendance by staff.

  8. Support access to the arts for all students.

  9. Perform other tasks/responsibilities related to the position.


BUDGET/FISCAL:

  1. Prepare budget proposal and administer approved budget for district program.

  2. Administer and maintain individual district budgets for teachers within the art and music departments.

  3. Collaborate with the building principal on the identification of materials appropriate for the implementation of curriculum.

  4. Prepare specifications for fine arts bids and supervises the purchase of fine arts materials and equipment in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.

  5. Collaborate with the building principal and department chairs in the selection, acquisition and use of departmental supplies, equipment, and supplementary materials.

  6. Perform other tasks/responsibilities related to the position.


COMMUNITY RELATIONS:

  1. Demonstrate use of appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

  2. Articulate the district’s mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies to the community and solicits its support in realizing department’s mission.

  3. Demonstrate an awareness of district/community information needs and initiates activities to meet those needs.

  4. Serve as district liaison to FABG (Fine Arts Booster Group) and other community/parent arts organizations.

  5. Promotes awareness of district arts activities and student achievement with parents, community and media.

  6. Advocate for support of Arts education.

  7. Perform other tasks/responsibilities related to the position.


Salary Range: $85,000-90,000
