JOB
GOAL:
To provide counseling and guidance services to
K-6
students and their families which will enable
students to
reach their potential and eliminate as far as
possible
problems that interfere with student
success.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
·
The elementary counselor currently provides
student services for children at NES three days per week and
for children at Howard two days per week.
The counselor works with building principals to
establish a weekly and daily schedule that includes both
buildings.
·
The elementary counselor
provides academic, personal, and career counseling for children
who are referred by principals, teachers, nurse, and parents as
well as those who self-initiate help.
·
The elementary counselor will work
with individual children to provide help with personal issues
(divorce, death, accident, fear, etc.), anger management and
other behavioral problems, academic problems, and a variety of
other issues.
·
The elementary counselor provides
age and grade appropriate class room presentations on relevant
academic and social topics to each grade level.
·
The elementary counselor assists
with child protection issues and reports.
·
The elementary counselor may
initiate or be requested by principal to organize and conduct
small group counseling sessions.
·
The elementary counselor
will work with the school nurse to provide resources for
students needing medical help, glasses, clothing, food and
other basic needs.
·
The elementary counselor will work
with classroom teachers to solve behavior, social and academic
problems of students.
·
The elementary counselor will
refer families to appropriate community agencies to find help
that can not be provided by the school.
·
The elementary counselor
represents the corporation on SHOCAP.
·
The elementary counselor may be
called upon to meet with administration, teachers, parents and
other counselors to solve school wide or corporation
problems.
·
The elementary counselor will
participate in Special Education conferences upon the request
of the Special Education Director, the principal, teacher, or
parents.
·
Upon request of the principal, the
elementary counselor will serve as the General Education
Intervention Team chairman.
·
The elementary counselor will work
with Guidance Director and others in crisis situations to
provide necessary services.
·
The elementary counselor will follow corporation
policies, local, state and national standards for guidance and
counseling.

The elementary counselor will work
with high school and middle school counselor and the guidance
director to assure articulated K-12 guidance services and
programs.
·
The elementary counselor will be
involved in standardized testing, curriculum writing and staff
development as determined by the superintendent, building
principals, and guidance director.
·
Other duties may be assigned to
the counselor as deemed necessary by the principal or his
designee.
·
In all responsibilities, the
elementary counselor will serve as the advocate for the
children of Northwestern School Corporation.
