DESCRIPTION:

This position follows the teacher school year schedule of 180 days and incumbent will be placed on the teacher salary schedule.

 

SUMMARY:

This position is accountable for establishing a safe and stable school climate and culture by collaborating with administrators, teachers, parents, and volunteers to ensure that all students are successful in the academically rigorous setting. The Dean will think critically about ways to solve disciplinary issues, including academic and non-academic issues, in order to ensure that students are getting the support they need to maintain high levels of performance. In addition, the Dean will build relationships with all students and families to help create a positive and supportive community.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Valid Illinois Special (Type 10) LBS1 Endorsement

Type 75 Certificate

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

All teachers in this class must complete 125 recertification units each five-year period for re-licensure.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1.     Considerable knowledge of current best practices, laws, including due process and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and interventions regarding the education of special needs students;

2.     Considerable knowledge of specific disabilities and familiarity with common children’s mental health disorders, as well as specific strategies/interventions to use in the classroom or other school setting;

3.     Knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods and approaches, and currently researched best practices and strategies;

4.     Knowledge of relevant Board of Education policies and District administrative procedures;

5.     Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal rules, regulations and laws;

6.     Knowledge of District and state reporting procedures and requirements;

7.     Knowledge of District and state attendance policies and laws;

8.  Knowledge of child development;

9.  Knowledge of learning theory; students’ learning styles and needs, both academic and affective;

10.  Knowledge of Response to Intervention (RtI);

11.  General knowledge of educational testing;

12.  Skill in classroom and behavior management;

13.  Skill in working with students having a wide range of disabilities;

14.  Skill in the five real-life transition areas is required for some positions;

15.  Skill in organization, and in verbal and written communications;

   16.  Skill in utilizing computer technology for educational purposes, including word processing;

17.  Skill in interpersonal relationships, and the ability to work with students and staff in stressful situations;

18.  Skill in transitional service planning and remedial instruction;

19.  Skill in interpersonal relations, especially regarding working as a member of a team;

20.  Ability to mediate and resolve conflict;

21.  Ability to develop and update curriculum, lesson plans and associated materials necessary to meet the unique needs of the special education students;

22.  Ability to develop relevant assessment tools, and integrate the results of the assessments into instructional units;

23.  Ability to teach a variety of students, with varying disabilities, a variety of classes;

24.  Ability to create a structured and efficient working environment for students;

25.  Ability to be flexible regarding meeting the changing needs of students, as well as the varying modifications to District and State mandates;

26.  Ability to apply the principles of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS);

27.  Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

POSITION SUPERVISES:

May provide work direction to paraprofessionals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.

1.     Participates in the development of school procedures designed to affect positive school behavior;

2.     Participates in any crisis intervention;

3.     Communicates with students, parents, staff, and administration relating to student behaviors, attendance, truancies, and tardiness;

4.     Assists in general preventative programs;

5.     Participates in workshops and/or training that address improving school climate, positive behavior strategies, diversity, safe school, etc.;

6.     Assists with morning and after school student supervision;

7.     Implements the student attendance policy which includes monitoring student compliance with building and District attendance policies; initiating appropriate communications when attendance policy violations occur; maintaining disciplinary records for attendance policy violations; implementing truancy procedures when appropriate; representing the District during truancy proceedings; and assisting staff in addressing student attendance problems;

8.     Implements Student Code of Conduct which includes monitoring student compliance with the established Code; maintaining records of disciplinary actions administered, including electronic records; initiating appropriate communications with students, parents/guardians, and other staff; preparing and submitting reports regarding disciplinary actions imposed; and representing the District in any proceedings regarding student discipline (court proceedings, expulsion hearings, etc.);

9.     Acts as the Principal’s designee during Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) meetings which includes assisting in the implementation of IEPs; assisting in the development, implementation, and monitoring of individual learning plans for at-risk students; assisting in scheduling, communication, set-up, and implementation of parent-teacher conferences, back-to-school orientation and open house events; and assisting in the direction of and/or serving on the school improvement team and other building committees as assigned;

10.  Assists in coordinating the activities program which includes preparing an annual schedule for all middle school activities; interviewing and selecting coaches and advisors for activities; monitoring and assessing the performance of coaches and advisors; scheduling events and facilities transportation necessary for events; securing officials for all games and/or meets; preparing information for students and parents/guardians regarding available programs and participation guidelines/requirements; preparing and submitting requisitions for activities program equipment; maintaining records related to eligibility verification, participation consent, athletic physicals, payment of activity fees, etc.; monitoring and maintaining compliance with Illinois athletic and league rules and regulations; conducting annual reviews and evaluations of middle school activity programs; preparing and submitting an annual budget for middle school activity programs; and submitting appropriate documentation for the payment of officials, game workers, coaches, advisors, etc.;

11.   Maintains accurate records of student disciplinary files, parent contacts concerning student behavior, and other programs;

12.  Maintains security and confidentially of files, records, and other items relating to students and staff;

13.  Assists in keeping the staff and administration aware of all behavioral incidents;

14.  Provides staff and administration with information concerning student conflict and disciplinary cases;

15.  Ensures compliance with ADA, IDEA and state mandates regarding student and parent due process;

16.  Provides for the safety and security of all students;

17.  Follows universal precautions in accordance with OSHA standards Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by administration;

18.  Develops, adapts and implements curriculum and lesson plans and aligns curriculum with academic standards;

19.  Provides for the management of student behavior, including implementing disciplinary procedures.

20.  Assists with the development of individualized intervention plans; writing and implementing conditional procedures; and modeling specific strategies for other instructional staff;

21.  Works with Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) teams in the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEP); providing for IEP management and reevaluation; assisting with goal writing in accordance with regulations and procedures; and setting up and participating in IEP conferences;

22.  Serves as a liaison to case managers with regard to transition planning and plans at the Middle School and High School levels;

23.  Develops or utilizes assessment tools and progress reports, including the Illinois Interactive report cards;

24.  Develops data collection and data management systems; entering data into proprietary and other computer databases; analyzing data, identifying student needs, and recommending quarterly classes based upon individual student needs;

25.  Develops positive and trusting relationships with students; counseling students and reviewing transition activities with students; and providing job coaching for students regarding their community job placement activities;

26.  Communicates and provides consultation with team members, parents and guardians, the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL), and other outside agencies, regarding students, their interventions, medications, and programmatic needs;

27.  Provides for the safety of students including extreme weather, transportation, and unknown personnel; supervising students in building and on school grounds in areas other than the classroom, such as playgrounds, and as students board and disembark from school buses;

28.  Ensures that teams are utilizing concepts of least restrictive environment and best practices with students;

29.  Attends various meetings, such as staff, building, parent, team and case management;

30.  Participates in staff development activities;

31.  Facilitates meetings as outlined in the truancy alternative and optional education program (TAOEP) grant;

32.  Conducts individual, family, and group sessions with students participating in the TAOEP;

33.  Develops individual service plans for each student participating in the TAOEP;

34.  May provide in-service training to other staff;

35.  May orders supplies and materials related to curriculum and instruction;

36.  Performs related duties as required

Qualifications:
