Title:
Building Engineer
Reports
to: Director
of Fiscal Services
Position/Role Summary: The building
engineer is responsible for the supervision of custodial
cleaning activities for school building and school
grounds. This includes supervising custodians, performing
custodial work and performing maintenance work and related
tasks as required.
Qualifications
:
•
The building engineer/head custodian should hold a high school
diploma or equivalent.
•
Candidate should have a min. of three years of experience in
building care and cleaning or maintenance operations,
or an equivalent combination of both which will
provide knowledge, skill and ability required.
•
Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license.
•
Willingness to participate in training as needed.
•
Ability to perform tasks under varying weather
conditions.
•
Candidate should demonstrate an ability to communicate with
staff and administration.
•
Candidate should demonstrate the ability to train and supervise
employees.
•
Candidate should demonstrate an ability to work independently
to resolve issues.
•
One year experience as a school custodian preferred.
•
Consideration will be given to the following:
•
References that indicate the candidate demonstrates courtesy in
dealing with students, parents, teachers, principals,
superintendent,
and the general public.
•
References that indicate the candidate possesses thorough
knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in
the
building care a
nd cleaning, the ability to do mechanical
repairs, follow oral and written instructions, and
possesses
supervisory ability.
•
Must be in good physical health to successfully perform the
required duties.
•
Knowledge of computer assisted HVAC systems.
•
Possess computer skills as necessary.
•
Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in general
maintenance and construction work and the ability to learn
their
use.
•
Ability to operate a variety of mechanical equipment.
Duties and
Responsibilities
:
Supervisory
:
•
Advises Director of Fiscal Services of major maintenance
problems.
•
Keep required records utilizing computer technology.
•
Establishes and maintains a regular preventative maintenance
program for the HVAC system.
•
Assigns, oversees, and reviews the work of all custodians
assigned for conformance with established cleaning standards on
a
daily basis
and is responsible for daily and nightly checks
of custodians' work areas.
•
Trains employees on proper cleaning, maintenance, and safety
procedures.
•
Assists in establishment of custodial work schedules.
•
Coordinates vacation schedules for all assigned
custodians.
•
Makes daily checks with the school principal for emergency and
necessary work for professional staff.
•
Schedules the maintenance program for lawn and shrub care in
and around the school.
•
Supervises and assists with the maintenance of grounds and
landscaping work around the building.
•
Supervises and assists with snow removal and sanding of icy
conditions of grounds.
•
Supervises and helps prepare building for school
activities.
•
Assumes the responsibility of maintaining a safe and secure
building.
•
Interfaces with Morton Grove Fire Department for all
inspections and drills and maintains necessary records.
•
Designated person to maintain asbestos management plan.
•
Maintain an effective safety and HAZMAT program for
custodians.
•
Develop a schedule for summer cleaning of buildings.
•
Maintain district vehicles and equipment.
•
Performs related supervisory duties as assigned.
Custodial
Responsibilities
:
•
Requisitions and maintains an inventory of cleaning material
and equipment.
•
Performs daily maintenance on pool per IDPH regulations.
•
Is available in emergency situations involving the school
building(s) such as power failures, heating and ventilation
problems,
plumbing or
any related problems that may arise.
•
Inspects heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems for
proper operation and makes minor repairs.
•
Maintains a regular servicing schedule for all motors, burners,
clean-out traps, valves and strainers.
•
Performs minor maintenance as required such as fixing locks,
replacing window panes, resurfacing desks, patching
plaster,
painting,
fixing faucets, and making general
repairs.
•
Conducts regular safety inspections of the building(s) and
grounds.
•
Loads and unloads trucks or other vehicles and provides
assistance in the moving of heavy equipment and
materials.
•
Assists in receiving, storing, and distributing materials for
instruction and school lunch programs.
•
Sweeps, dusts, mops, scrubs interior walls and floors, cleans
furniture and carpeting regularly. .
•
Schedules pest management. Acts as Integrated Pest
Management Coordinator (IPM program).
•
Maintains a clean and efficient work environment.
•
Maintains a list of all stock and equipment for fixed assets
control. Report to be provided to Director of Fiscal
Services.
•
Performs related custodial tasks as assigned.
Building Operation
•
Operates computer-controlled systems.
•
Assists with the development of school and capital
budgets.
•
Coordinates with the school staff for after school building
use.
•
Maintains all inventories of supplies and building maintenance
records.
Terms of Employment
•
Full time employment, 40 hours per week, 12-month
assignment. Salary and benefits determined by the
NTDSE
Governing Board.
