Salary Grade H - $12.06/hr to start, $13.40/hr after six months. Benefits available
SUMMARY: Position is 35 hours per week during the school year.
Assist in the individualized care and daily educational
program of severely physically, emotionally or cognitively impaired
students. Assist
teachers in classroom operation as well as providing one-on-one assistance to
students. Individualized care may
include, but is not limited to, assisting in the feeding, grooming, toileting,
and occupational or physical therapy follow-up plans of students.
Under the supervision of
the district nurse and per student health plans, perform delegated nursing
duties-
Assists
teacher in classroom operation and maintaining discipline.

Tutors small
groups or individual pupils; may serve as note taker.

Assists
students with schoolwork, test taking, organization, studying, and related
tasks.

Implements/follows
teacher's instructions of classroom procedures - reinforcement, philosophy and
consistency.

Carries out physical
and occupational therapy programs designed by therapists.

Assists
students during mainstreamed activities and adapts curriculum if necessary.

Assists in
instructional program including computerized instruction. Works with multiple augmentative communication
devices and systems, such as Touch Talkers, Picture Exchange Communication
System, switches, etc.

Provides
vocational and job site training and modeling of job and social skills.

Assists
students with and provides training on functional living skills, including
cooking, shopping, community awareness, money management, and safety.

Handles and/or
assists students with daily personal care functions, which may include
toileting, diapering, grooming, teeth brushing, female personal hygiene, nose
wiping, etc.

Assists in
food preparation and instructs students with feeding skills.

Collects data
regarding student activity and performance, and use of positive reinforcement
and consequences.

Assists with
attendance reports, grading of papers and tests, set-up of classroom,
preparation of materials for specialized instructional units, and other
clerical duties.

Supervises
student involved in non-classroom activities, i.e., recess, lunch, etc.

Makes
appropriate referrals when difficulties arise and teacher is not readily
available.

Escorts
students to and from various rooms and the bus.

Sanitizes
classroom and equipment using approved materials.

Assists in
non-invasive procedures such as tube feedings, nebulizers, etc.

Understands
and is aware of students' medical needs; may assist in administering
medications, including suppository medications, record keeping, and record
distribution.

Assists
instructional staff in the supervision of students while they are loading and
unloading buses, in gym, and playground.

Lifts or
assists with lifting students from wheelchairs to changing tables or designated
areas. Operates mechanical lift when
appropriate.

Employee may
be requested to attend leisure and recreational activities such as
Special Olympics, Eagle Mount, dances, etc.

Communicates
with family and/or external agency employees.
-
May assist
with washing dishes and doing laundry.
-
Treats all
matters of school business in a confidential manner.
-
May carry out
behavior intervention plans in general education and special education classes.
-
May assist in
de-escalating students with disruptive or unsafe behavior.
Qualifications: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Prior experience working with special needs students preferred.
