Position: Director of Planning, Communications and Community Education
Description: The Director of Planning, Communications and Community Education,
reports to the Director of Student Development and Program Evaluation and has
responsibility for three areas of school administration:
- Stakeholder qualitative/quantitative data gathering, analysis and
reporting
- Community engagement to link community resources with school
resources, communications, grant-writing, and special projects development and
administration
- Fee-based community education school year and summer programs
All three areas of responsibility require proactive marketing, communications,
strategic planning, budget, data analysis and entrepreneurial skills. The position requires the ability to
assess new opportunities, make connections to school needs, gather and analyze
data, and develop teams and resources to respond.
1. Stakeholder
Qualitative/Quantitative Data Analysis and Report Writing, and Grant Writing
In the Needham Schools we believe that success is more than test
scores. Success is a healthy
school culture; a learning environment where students find their passions and
have opportunities to develop socially and emotionally as well as academically.
To this end, the Director of Planning, Communications and Community Education
focuses on analyzing and reporting on non-academic data gathering to monitor
valued metrics that will help the district improve its services, programs, and
planning. The Director tells the Needham
story in honest and informative ways via the annual Performance Report and
district website. In addition, the Director seeks out, plans and writes grant
proposals to support district initiatives.
Specific responsibilities:
- Plans, prepares copy, edits, and helps design the school system's annual Performance Report
- Oversees administration/analysis of annual data gathering efforts
such as biennial parent survey, biennial alumni survey, biennial Metrowest
Adolescent Health Survey
- Works with staff to design, execute and analyze data for specific
needs including preparing surveys, conducting qualitative data gathering
through focus groups or interviews, preparing analysis and reports
- Serves on district committees and task forces where planning,
project development, data gathering/analysis and grant writing expertise is
needed
- Plans and writes
grant proposals to government, foundation, corporate or private grant
makers
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships with grant
making agencies and institutions
2. Communications
The Director of Planning, Communications and Community Education
partners with school staff and community members and organizations to develop
the school/community partnerships that make that vision and communication
strategies that make the district’s vision a reality. The Director engages in a
continuous process of making connections among people, programs, resources and
ideas – to add value to experiences for students. In this role, the Director
may function as community liaison for projects, and acts as an advisor to a
project or group, or may assist with fund-raising and planning a special
project. Additionally, the
Director plans web-based, print and media communications for school departments
and projects.
Specific responsibilities:
- Cooperatively works with district staff and community members in
planning new initiatives, designing projects
- Ensures the district’s web presence is updated and robust
- Develops communications plans for particular projects as needed
- Functions as school liaison for community partnerships that support
key district initiatives
- Acts as primary contact to Needham Education Foundation
- Functions as primary contact for Needham private schools as
required by grant guidelines
3. Community
Education
Needham Community Education, now in its 7th year, provides
high-quality customer-driven lifelong learning experiences to all community
members. The self-sustaining
program currently serves approximately 6,400 adults and children per year, with
annual revenues of about $1.5M. Programs include: Adult Education and Adult
Volunteers; High School, Middle School and Elementary Enrichment Programs; and
Summer Programs. Community Education school-day programs include a fee-based ½
day Kindergarten program which supplements the public school ½ day program. The
focus on high-quality, value-driven offerings has earned Community Education an
excellent reputation in Needham and neighboring communities resulting in an
annual growth rate of approximately 10-15% per year.
Specific responsibilities:
- Hire and supervise Community Education Program Coordinators and
staff; provide appropriate professional development opportunities for
continuous improvement
- Lead strategic planning, branding and marketing for Community
Education programs
- Prepare annual Community Education budget with Program Directors
Coordinators; forecast revenues and scale program and staff accordingly
- Problem-solve and support Community Education Program Directors in
program management and growth (supervision, program evaluation, curriculum,
budgeting, marketing, building use, etc)
- Maintain positive working relationships with Central
Administration, school leaders, and community groups
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree or higher, MBA or equivalent experience a plus
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Marketing, branding, product development
- Budget development and management
- Skills in qualitative and quantitative data gathering and analysis
- Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies – school and
community -- towards a common goal
- Ability to strategically make connections among people, programs,
resources, and ideas
- Ability to develop trusting relationships with a wide range of
stakeholders
- Proven track record in planning, project development, grant
writing
- Expertise in qualitative and quantitative research
- Experience with budget development and management
- Experience with competitive and discretionary grants preferable
- Experience in a public school setting a plus
Work Schedule: 215 days per
year, distributed over twelve months, days, evenings, school vacations, and
weekends depending upon program schedules, and coordinated with other Community
Education Team members
